“With what exactly?” I asked him.

“As you know, Sophie has aphasia, she hasn’t spoken since she’s been born, we’ve seen all the doctors, I mean that day you met her at the airport, she and my brother were just coming back from another appointment with a doctor. None of them have been able to help but then she meets you for a few minutes and everything changes.” He tells me.

“Can I ask you something Mr. Burrows?”

“Of course and you can call me Samuel.” He tells me.

“Is there a reason why your daughter would mistake me for her mother?” I asked him and I see a flash of pain pass his face.

“I actually have no idea, you don’t look like her mother at all.” He tells me.

“So she does have a mother?” I ask him.

“Yes she does, but she’s not around that much. Look I don’t know why Sophie called you her mum but frankly that’s not what I’m interested in.” He tells me.

“You’re interested in why I’m the first person that she decided to talk to.” I tell him.

“That’s right.” He tells me.

“You know I want to say you’re wrong and that it might just be a fluke but I know enough about aphasia to know that isn’t true and I really like your daughter, so if there’s any way that I can help her then I’ll be happy to.” I tell him.

“Thank you so much Miss. Edmund, and of course I’ll pay whatever it is you’re charging.” He tells me.

Immediately my good mood is ruined, we were having a good conversation and he just had to go and ruin it by bringing in money.

“I do not need your money Mr. Bowers, like I said I like your daughter, I’m doing this for her.”

I tell him.

“No, you surely must want something.” He tells me.

“No, I do not.” I snap at him.

“Did I say something wrong?” He asks me.

“No, you didn’t, I’m just tired, I just got back to Delmore, to a pack I’ve never been in, where I don’t know anyone and I’ve barely had anytime to get my bearings.” I tell him.

“Ok, I understand. So if you won’t accept anything then please accept this, if you ever need anything, anything at all, just give me a call.” He tells me.

“Ok.” I tell him because I really do not have the strength in me to argue with this man.

He stretches his hand out for a handshake and I take his hand and immediately I feel a jolt go through my body. What the hell?

The next thing I know, I start getting flashes from that night six years ago. I immediately let go of his hand, grab my bag and stand up from my chair.

“Are you ok Miss Edmund?” Samuel asks me, he looks shocked like me but he also looks worried.

“Yes, I’m fine, it’s just, I left my boys home alone and they’ll soon be up so I have to get going.” I tell him.

“Yes of course.” He says.

“I’m pretty sure you already have my number, so you can just call or text and we can set up a time for me to meet with Sophie.” I tell him and I don’t even wait for him to reply, I turn around and leave his office and I pray in my head that he doesn’t follow me.

I hear Billy call out for me but I do not turn around, I call the elevator and step in and I immediately press the button for the ground floor. I know when Billy first told me that this elevator only goes up to the last floor, I thought it was a waste of money but I am so glad that I’m the only one in here right now.

What the hell happened in there? I’ve never felt anything like that before in my life and what was with those memories coming back. I tried everything for almost a year to recall my memories of that night and none of them worked so I finally decided to let it go, I haven’t thought of that night in years so why all of a sudden did the memories just pop up like that?

The elevator opens up to the ground floor and I quickly make my way out of the building and back into my car. In the safety of my car, I finally allow myself to take a few deep breaths and

then I call the kids.

“Hello mummy.” Clayton answers the phone, I just knew he would be the one awake, his

brother sleeps like the dead, nothing and no one can wake him up unless he wants to wake up.

But just hearing his voice did exactly what I knew it would and I could feel myself starting to calm down.

“Hey sweetheart, where’s your brother?” I asked him.

“He’s still asleep.” Clayton tells me.

“Of course he is, what are you up to?” I asked him.

“Playing my video game.” He says.

“Please tell me you at least brushed your teeth and washed your face first?” I ask him.

“I washed my face.” He says.

“Ok young man, I’m going to need you to put down that tablet and go brush your teeth. I’m on my way home and I’ll pick up breakfast on my way.” I tell him.

“Bagels and cream cheese please mummy.” He pleads.

“Ok baby, I’ll be home soon.” I tell him.

“See you soon.” He says and then he hangs up and I can only hope that he’s on his way to go and brush his teeth.

I blame Theo for his obsession with everything technology and games. While I was working eithet Theo or Ian would help babysit tye boys and while Xavier was interested in the outdoors, Clayton was drawn to what Theo did. Speaking of Theo, that gives me an idea.

I dial him immediately; “Hey str

anger.” He greets as he picks up.

“Hey Theo, I need your help with something.”
