Chapter 23
The soft creak of the door made my stomach twist. Mira stepped
inside, her eyes narrowing slightly when she saw me sitting on the
edge of the guest bed.
“I thought this wasn’t your room,” she said, her voice calm but
curious. Her gaze moved to the half–empty coffee cup on the
nightstand.
I blinked, trying to look casual. “Yeah… I know. I guess I just ended
here. I didn’t even notice until now.”
up
Her brows pulled together slightly like she was trying to read into my
tone. But she let it go.
“Well, Damian called for me. He needs me somewhere,” she said,
already turning toward the hallway. “Just stay inside, okay? The
guards are active. Don’t open the door for anyone. And try not to
wander.”
I nodded. “Sure.”
Mira gave me one last glance. “You okay?”

“Yeah. Just tired.”
“Alright.” She stepped out, the door clicking softly behind her as she
left the house.
I waited in silence until I heard the front door shut and the low hum
of the car pulling away.
Then I moved fast.
I grabbed the laptop from under the pillow, opened it, and quickly
cleared the browser history. If Mira noticed what I had been digging
into, it would only raise more questions.
Once the laptop was clean, I closed it and stood up. The silence in the
house wrapped around me again, but this time it felt heavier–like it
was waiting for something.
I walked into the hallway slowly, running my hand along the smooth
wall as I passed closed doors. How many rooms had I never noticed
before? This house was a maze, and I had only seen a fraction of it.
As I walked, I hummed softly.
Aleshka… lae vahira,

Vanthor… sael dreenka…
The lullaby echoed in my throat. Soft. Ancient. Unfamiliar. But it
clung to me like breath.
My steps slowed as I approached a tall, dark door at the far end of the
hallway.
Something told me to stop.
Damian’s office.
I’d never been inside. Never even touched the door before.
But it wasn’t locked.
I turned the handle slowly and pushed it open.
The room was quiet, neat, and cold in a way that felt intentional. A
large desk stood at the center with papers stacked in perfect order.
Bookshelves lined the walls, filled with thick, worn volumes in
different languages. I hesitated in the doorway.
Then I stepped inside.
The first few drawers were locked, but the bottom one opened with a

soft click. Inside were files–dozens of them. Medical, government, council–related. My fingers hovered over one with a name written on
the tab.
Selene Elira Wolfe.
My breath caught.
I pulled it out and flipped through quickly. Most of it was written in
Italian–Damian’s native tongue, maybe. I couldn’t understand any of
it, but the charts, tables, and symbols told me this wasn’t just a basic
file.
My name was stamped on almost every page.
I set it aside and moved toward the bookshelves. There were books on
old werewolf bloodlines, extinct clans, records of war. Then–tucked
between two dusty folders–was a thin booklet. The pages inside were
filled with names.
Names of dead werewolves.
Labeled. Dated. Some crossed out in red. All from different
bloodlines. I didn’t recognize any of them, but something about the structure–this cataloging of death–sent a chill through me,

I returned to the folder with my name, flipping deeper until I saw it.
A test result.
I froze.
It was marked with the same stamp as the blood test the Council
demanded I take before I left. I hadn’t heard anything about it since.
Damian never told me the results were out.
But there it was.
My blood type was highlighted and circled.
A/N–Rare.
What…?
I blinked. I had no idea what that even meant. Was that what Damian
was hinting at this morning when he looked at me like he wanted to
say more?
Why didn’t he tell me?
I sat down slowly in the leather chair behind the desk. My fingers scrolled through the digital records on the desktop screen. The more I

saw, the more lost I felt.
Gene markers.
Suppressed traits.
Lunar abnormalities.
Everything pointed to something hidden inside me. Something even I
hadn’t known was there. My body felt normal–weak even–but these
results said otherwise.
My eyes burned. My heart was racing.
What was I?
Why were my files hidden here?
How much did Damian really know?
Time passed fast. Too fast. I didn’t even realize the sun had started to
