Chapter 56
Selene’s POV
“Get me out of here,” I snapped, the words falling from my lips like
fire.
The chauffeur blinked from the driver’s seat, startled by my tone, but one look at my expression told him not to ask questions. Without a word, he stepped on the gas, and the sleek black car peeled away from the glowing gala hall, leaving behind the glitter, the laughter… and
Damian.
I clenched my fists on my lap, struggling to breathe past the burning in my throat. Four damn glasses of wine, a red dress that fit like a second skin, and for what? So he could disappear for an entire hot So I could find him by the pool with Layla’s lips on his?
What the actual f**k?
My reflection in the window showed tearless eyes. I wasn’t going to cry. Not over this. Not over him. But my chest hurt like I’d been punched. Was this why he hadn’t marked me? Was I still just the
rogue’s daughter? A girl bought in an auction while he had real options–like Layla?

The car slowed, pulling up to the estate. Before the driver could come around to open my door, I pushed it open myself and stormed out.
Mira was on the living room couch, legs tucked under her, flipping
through a fashion magazine.
“Whoa,” she said, sitting up quickly as I threw my heels on the floor and paced across the room. “Selene? You look like you just walked out
of war. Where the hell is Damian?”
“Back at the gala,” I muttered, grabbing a glass of water with
trembling fingers.
Her brows furrowed. “What happened?”
I turned to her, breathing heavily. “I don’t even know why I’m this
upset.
“Start talking,” Mira said, rising and crossing her arms. “Don’t make
me use force.”
I laughed–sharp, humorless. “I waited. For an hour. He left me with nothing but a promise to come back. So I went to look for him.”
“And?”

“I found him by the pool,” I said, eyes narrowing. “With Layla. Her
mouth on his. And he didn’t even push her away.”
Mira’s mouth dropped open. “What?”
“I shouldn’t care, right? But I do. Because maybe this is why he hasn’t marked me. Maybe he still loves her. Or maybe I’m not worth it. Just some girl bought from an auction. Some rogue’s daughter with no
status, no family. Nothing.”
Mira opened her mouth to speak, but the front door opened behind
The air shifted.
I turned slowly to see him–Damian. Or rather, Alpha Damian. Powerful, composed… and silent.
“Out,” he said to Mira, voice low, commanding.
Mira looked between us and held her hands up. “Fine. But if I hear crashing sounds, I’m calling backup.”
She disappeared upstairs, and the room fell into silence. My heart thundered in my chest.

“You left me,” I said. “For an hour.”
“I told you I’d be right back.”
“And you ended up with your
ex’s tongue down your throat.”
His jaw clenched. “It wasn’t like that.”
“Wasn’t it?” I stepped closer, fury swirling with something hotter, darker. “Tell me–do you still want her? Is that it? Is she the reason you haven’t marked me?”
He closed the distance between us in a flash, eyes blazing. “You think I haven’t marked you because I don’t want you?”
“I don’t know what to think anymore.”
