“He kissed me, and it ignited something in me. I… We slept together.”

William’s face went blank. “You what?”

“I’m sorry, William. We have to cancel the engagement. It isn’t right.”

“He seduced you,” William said.

“He’s in love with you because you look like the Laila he remembers. That’s why he was always acting so jealous of me,” William said. “No, William. I think he might have been drugged or something. I don’t know how.”

William shook his head, not listening to me now. Likely he hadn’t heard a word I said since I told him Jason and I had slept together.

“No,” he said firmly. “No, I have a better idea. I’m going to deal with this, once and for all.”

He tried to move around me, so I stepped in his path. “What are you going to do?”

“Don’t worry,” he said. He gripped me by the upper arms and gently moved me to the side. “I’ll take care of everything.”

Then, after letting me go, he stormed down the hallway, his entire body tense like a coiled snake, ready to strike.

I had no idea what William was going to do. I knew I should probably stop him. Yet just as I was about to, I heard a soft sniffling that stopped me in my tracks.

Turning toward the door, I saw Ava standing there, looking at me through the window. There were tears in her eyes.

Realizing she had been caught, she turned and ran farther into the room.

I pulled open the door and went inside, chasing after my little girl who had flung herself onto the bed and buried herself under the covers.

“Ava…” I said, rushing to her. I placed my hand over the lump in the bed where I guessed her shoulder to be. “What’s wrong?” “Why was Papa William upset? Why were you fighting?” Her voice was small, muffled under the covers.

It broke my already wounded heart.

“We were having a disagreement, honey, but we weren’t fighting. Adults do that sometimes.”
