Or I failed her wolf. There had been so marry complications during the pregnancy and birth. If I had been able to properly care for myself, for her… Gods forgive me, had done the best that I could at the time. Why did that never feel like enough?
“There is only one possible solution now,” he said. “She will need someone to donate werewolf essence to help boost her own wolf’s vitality.”
“She can have mine,” I said at once.
“Mine too,” William quickly added.
The healer nodded critically. “We will test you both to see if your essence is a match. It has to be compatible with what Ava’s wolf needs. A blood relation would be best, Ms. Harper. But we would be willing to test anyone for the girl’s sake.”
“Thank you,” I said.
“Come with me and we will test you at once.”
William and I both went with the doctor to have our wolf essence tested.
After an hour, waiting on pins and needles, the bad news came back.

“Neither of you are a match for what we need.”
It was after 8 am by this point, so I made a few more phone calls. All I had to do was suggest what I needed, and Riley came in at once. Claire did as well, and had even recruited a few others from the office. Even those that didn’t particularly like me still wanted to help my little girl.
“I’m sorry,” the healer said to me, once everyone had been tested. “None of the people who came in were a match.”
My heart sank. What was I going to do? Maybe I could put up flyers, or have some kind of campaign?
“Those with blood relations would be the most likely to match,” the healer told me, pulling me from my thoughts. “Is there anyone… any other relation to you, or to Ava… Anyone at all who could come forward?”
“No, I…” I didn’t want to tell him about my past. I was supposed to be Vanessa Harper, who had a family. Not the orphan that I was. “No one would help.”
“Perhaps Ava’s father…?” the healer asked gently.
I hung my head.
William stepped in. “He’s out of the picture.”
“I understand,” the healer said. “But now might be the time to reach out. For Ava’s sake.”
“Thank you,” I told him, before William could say anything else.
The healer nodded and stepped back, giving us space. He must have known that we needed it.
William turned to me. “You cannot be thinking about asking Jason.”
“I’d do anything to save Ava,” I said.
William grit his teeth. “After what happened…”
“I know. But… I don’t think he’d want Ava to die. He’s mad at me, not her. And if he knew the truth… Or if he could just listen… He might try to see if he’s a match without needing the truth.”
“It’s a bad idea,” William said firmly.

William looked at me hard, and looked hard back.
