Laila’s POV
I drove to Jason’s pack house, forcing myself to pay attention to the rules of the road when my mind kept wandering. My heart was sore. I didn’t want to do this. I just wanted to be at home with my healthy daughter.
But the reality was far harsher. Ava wasn’t healthy, and she needed me to find a way to help her. Right now, it seemed the only way to do that was to appeal to her biological father. A man who was presently very angry with me. Who likely never wanted to see me again.
I couldn’t let that stop me. Ava was my daughter, and if all it would take to save her would be convincing Jason, I would do that. I would do whatever it took to save her.
Yet, when I finally arrived at the pack house, the gate barring the driveway was closed. I was forced to stop. As the gate guard motioned for me to lower my window, I did so. He leaned down.
“Vanessa Harper. You are barred from these premises. Return back to where you came ”
“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t important,” I said. “It’s literally life or death.”
“Nothing could be that vital,” he replied, looking at me flatly. It was clear he didn’t believe me. “Go home.”
“No,”
,” I said firmly. “I need to talk to Alpha Jason first. Please. It’s important.”
“Nothing could be
“It’s about my daughter Ava,” I said. “I’ll wait here. I’ll stay in the car. I won’t be any trouble. But I need to talk to Alpha Jason. Please.”
When the guard hesitated, I told him, “I’m leaving here until my message is delivered. You can arrest me if you want, but this is important. Ava is in trouble, and Jason… he might be able to help.”
I didn’t know what I looked like to him. My wild eyes must have been red–rimmed from all the tears I’d shed. Maybe my hands were shaking. Maybe I seemed as desperate as I felt.
“Your daughter. Ava,” he said. “The child?”
“She’s six,” I said. “And I was just told that she’s dying.”
The guard stood straight. “Stay here a moment.”
He returned to his gate house, and I held my breath, hoping a message would go through. I was lucky to find a guard who was sympathetic. If Jason could only know, then maybe he would be willing to talk. To hear me out. To save the daughter he didn’t know was his.
“Stay here,” the guard said, after a moment. “Someone will be out to speak with you.”
“Oh thank the Gods…” I said, until I lifted my head and saw the persons stepping out of the house, presumably to speak with me, was not Jason as I’d hoped. Instead, it was Brittany who stepped down from the front porch and made her way up the driveway toward the gate.
She stopped on the other side of it. I got out of my car to approach her, the bars between us.
Talking to Brittany was the last thing I wanted to do right now, but for Ava, I would swallow my pride.
“What the hells are you doing back here?” Brittany asked, short and annoyed, like she wanted to start a fight with me.
I wouldn’t take the bait. I came here for a reason.
“Ava is in trouble,” I said, trying to be calm. “She needs a donor for wolf essence. I feel that Jason could be a match. I’m here to

ask him if he will agree to be tested.”
Huffing, Brittany leaned heavily to one side. She put a hand on her hip. “Why would you think Jason would be a match? There are a million people out there. Go bother one of them.”
“Jason has the best chance of it, I’m sure of it,” I said. I didn’t want to tell Brittany the truth. H anyone should know, it would be Jason. I wasn’t going to pass along my secret with the woman who despised me most in the world. “I just need to speak to him.”
Brittany huffed. “I know what you want with him. I know what you did, and now you are back here to try to twist things around again. Well, guess what? Jason isn’t your plaything. He doesn’t owe you or your daughter a damn thing. If you are even telling the truth about her being in trouble…”
“I am,” I said, desperately. “Ava is dying.”
“I have no reason to believe you. Jason doesn’t want to see you, not after what you did. You should just get out of here. And don’t come back again. No one believes your sob story.”
“But Ava –”
“Even if what you are saying is true,” Brittany spat, “no one cares what happens to your brat.”
“You don’t understand. If you would just listen me, I could –”
Brittany waved at the gate guard. “If she doesn’t move at once, have her arrested.”
I froze. As much as I wanted to push this, I was no help to Ava if I was in jail. I had no choice but to leave.
Even if it hurt me.
Gods… Ava forgive me.
Jason’s POV
I looked out the window of my office just to see what appeared to be Vanessa’s car driving away and Brittany returning to the house. I stepped into the hallway to wave her down.
“Was that Vanessa?”
“Yes.” Brittany huffed. “You’ll never believe what she wants now.”
>>
“What did she want?” I asked.
“Money,” Brittany replied. “She wanted money from you. That’s all she’s ever wanted, Jason. I’ve told you to watch out for her before. Now she’s sniffing around, trying to cash in. You need to be more careful who you invite into your life.”
The words spiked through me, a knife to the heart. So that had been Vanessa’s plan all this time. She’d drugged me and seduced me in some kind of ploy to get my money.
It still didn’t make a lot of sense, but… with Ava in the hospital, perhaps Vanessa had fallen under hard times. But if she needed money, all she had to do was ask me. She didn’t need to go through these games.
I would have helped her and Ava. I liked the child a lot.
But with her desperation and her selfishness, Vanessa had ruined everything. Now, I couldn’t even see Ava again.
I missed Laila now more than ever. She was the one I wanted by my side here and now, but she was gone.
Turning, I walked back into my office.
Brittany followed me.
“I want to be alone,” I said.
