I’d always seem some of the similarity in frer to Laila, but in the past that had mainly been related to her appearance. Now…. seeing how strong she was, she was more like Laila than I had ever realized before. But she was also very much herself. It was all her qualities that I was beginning to like about her.
Even if it was better that I like them at a safer distance than this.
“Thank you,” she said. “For helping Ava.”
“I told you before, I care for Ava.” Softer, I added, “And for you. Whatever you need, I will assist you with.”
“I’m just so relieved that she will pull through. She’s been in so much trouble lately. To have at least one health problem to not worry about anymore is such a relief.”
I felt like the worst kind of asshole, thinking with my dick instead of my head. Of course Vanessa only wanted to thank me for helping Ava. Of course, she didn’t want me to actually kiss her.
She probably didn’t think about our moments together at all. Unlike me. I couldn’t get it out of my head.
To my own detriment, apparently.
“Then I’m glad to have given that to you,” I said. “You are overburdened, and…”
“Excuse me, Ms. Harper?” said a man in a ill–fitted suit. He wore the badge of a hospital employee, complete with a snapshot picture of himself. “I hate to bother you about this now, but there is the matter of your bill. All these tests have been done at your behest. I’m afraid the hospital will expect you to cover some of it.”
Vanessa’s face went pale as she turned. “We should speak about this elsewhere. Perhaps in your office. Just give me a moment to say goodbye to Alpha Jason.”
The man in the suit looked uncomfortably between us. “Of course. I will be expecting you with payment. Here is your bill.” The man passed it face–up to Vanessa and I caught a glimpse of a subtotal. It wasn’t even the total total.
That was a lot of numbers.
Vanessa quickly looked, turning even paler, before folding up the paper and tucking it in her pocket.
The man in the suit turned and left then.
“I have to go now,” Vanessa said. “But thank you again.”
Maybe I should have left well enough alone, but after seeing that amount, I couldn’t quite bring myself to do so. “Vanessa, how in the hells are you going to pay for all that?”
“I’ll find a way,” she said.
“Let me pay for it.”
She froze, then looked up at me. Where I thought I had seen some heat before was now replaced with rage.
“Absolutely not,” she said.
“You can’t possibly have that much money,” I said. “I do. Let me help you. I want to help you.”
“You’ve done enough.”
“I can do more.”
“No. None of this is your responsibility. I thank you for helping save Ava. But that’s already more than I can ask of you. There’s no way I can look to you for money as well.”

“It’s only money,” I told her. “If it would help you
Y
“I don’t need you,” she snapped. “Not with this. I’ve always done things on my own. Me and Ava, the two of us against the
or how you offer, or what happened… world. I never needed anyone else, and I won’t start now. I don’t care what you say, between us.”
“Vanessa, if
”
“Weren’t you leaving?” she asked.
Neither of us had moved an inch, yet everything felt different.
Vanessa’s pride had slammed shut a door between us. And I didn’t know how, or if, I should try to open it again.
