With the bill in my hands, the reality of the hole I had dug myself in was now very apparent. I didn’t want to tell Jason, didn’t want to explain, didn’t want to admit to anyone my level of failure. I had no idea what I was going to tell the man in collections. I could ask him to split the bill into payments, but I didn’t even have enough right now to make the first one.

Everything I had, I put into that black market listing.

But wait. Now that Jason had come forward as the match, I didn’t need the listing anymore. I could cancel and use the money I had set aside for that reward to cover my bills.

Rushing away from Jason, I found a quiet, secluded hallway to find Hank’s number stored in my phone and call him.

“For you to call me on purpose means either something bad really happened or something good,” he said when he answered the call. “Which is it?”

“Good,” I said. “I found the donor match that Ava needed, and not through the black market listing either. Please take it down and refund the money we put on hold for it.”

“Well, I’m glad to hear your kid will live,” Hank said, his voice as bright as it had been before. I got the sense that he didn’t care either way. But that was fine. I didn’t need for him to care. After this phone conversation, I was never going to want to talk to him ever again.

“Thank you, but if you could just –”

“And I’m excited to start our new partnership together. I think it’s going to be a beautiful thing,” Hank said.

New partnership? “What are you talking about? I’m asking you to take down the listing.”

“And I’m doing that.”

“That’s the end of the partnership.”

“Is it?” he asked, a grin in his voice.

A vile feeling of dread churned in my stomach. “I’ve already paid you.”

“You paid me once, and I accepted that, sure.”

“We had an agreement.”

“You didn’t tell me all the facts.”

I didn’t know what he was talking about. “This is ridiculous. I’m hanging up.”

“If you do that, I might have to open my mouth to Alpha Jason,” he said quickly, in a single breath.

I froze.

“Yeah, I thought that might get your attention. It’s funny how it worked out. He pulled me into his office by chance and asked me to investigate the very listing I had made. I kept quiet about it, of course, seeing an opportunity here.”

“He… did?”

“Yes. He was very interested in the DNA sequence we had attached to the listing. He wanted to know who it belonged to and where they were. Tell me, Vanessa. Is that information you would rather not be in the hands of Alpha Jason?”

“It is…”

With his engagement to Brittany and everything, I had given up telling him anything and let Ava got involved in their marriage.
