Hopefully soon, she would wake up and life could continue on as normal.
I was so preoccupied when I came home for these short bursts that sometimes I even forgot to check the mail. So when ! checked today, it was piled up in the mailbox. I grabbed it when I first arrived, then looked through it on my way to the house.
Bill. Bill Junk. Bill. Junk
Then I stopped. The next on the pile was a crisp white envelope with golden trim. If looked official, and like it was for a party. There was no return address, but also it was no mistake that was my name on the front.
I unlocked the house, then went inside. I dropped my bags and the rest of the mail on the kitchen counter and then tore open the envelope. From inside, I pulled out a crisp piece of folded cardstock, covered in that same gold embossing. The text was also in gold.
You are cordially invited…
I lifted the first fold.
To the mating ceremony of the century….
There was another fold to open.
Between an Alpha King and his beautiful Luna…
Lifting the final fold revealed the details of the event.
My stomach dropped.
The doorbell rang and I nearly dropped the invitation. I placed it down on the counter and went to get the door. I’d been expecting William. He’d told me he was going to bring over some takeout.
When I opened the door, he was standing there with two foam containers stacked on top of one another.
“I hope you are hungry,” he said.
I was still sort of speechless by what I had seen, so I just nodded and led him back toward the kitchen. At once, invitation on the counter.
“What’s this?”
“I don’t…”
He placed the containers aside and lifted up the invitation. As he read it over, his face hardened.
“They… invited you?”
“Yes.”

He tossed the invitation back onto the counter without care, huffing. “Forget it. They can go to hell. You don’t have to go to that.”
“I don’t know,” I said, unsure.
He stopped and looked at me. “You can’t actually be thinking of going. After what happened?”
“Jason and I are business partners again. And he’s been helping Ava. If he wants me to be there, I feel like I might have an obligation to go,” I said. Even if watching him vow his life to someone else made that ugly jealous feeling rise up within me again.

“No.” William said.
“No,” he said again later, despite our arguing, when we returned to the hospitat
“No,” he said one more time when we were in Ava’s room. “I forbid it.”
While I had been willing to entertain his objections before, his forbidding anything ignited my own anger.
“You don’t have a right to forbid anything,” I told him.
He pressed his mouth hard together, likely having realized his mistake. He softened, “I just don’t want to see you hurt. I know that watching Jason make someone else his official mate won’t feel good for you. There’s no reason for you to have to witness it.”
I lowered my head. “I think I have to see it.”
