Jason’s POV
“Calm down, Brittany.”
“Don’t tell me to calm down,” she snapped in reply. “I’m not the one out there breaking promises. I am going to be your wife, Jason! Doesn’t that matter? Do/mmy wants and desires mean nothing to you?”
“Of course it matters,” I told her. “But I am still Alpha, and the pack depends on me to bring in profits. This contract was exceedingly profitable and will be again. I can’t just turn my back on that.”
“Noteven to give your future wife peace of mind?”
“You have nothing to worry about. Vanessa and I are business partners only.”
Yes, I had impulses and desires that I would never tell Brittany about, that seemed to stir during wherr Vanessa and I had sex and have since never left. But those desires didn’t control me.
I knew my fate, and what expectations were placed upon me. Brittany was my mate, and during the mating ceremony, we would make it official.
My feelings, or whatever they were, for Vanessa didn’t matter. Neither did my lingering feelings for Laila.
“I will leave the day to day activity of the contract to others,” I said. “Even if there are emergencies, I’m sure that Marcus can handle it in my stead. There is no true reason for Vanessa and me to even interact except when absolutely needed.”
“That’s not good enough. She’s a snake, Jason. She will find a way to make sure that you will be needed more often than you think. I don’t want you talking to her at all!”
I didn’t want to tell Brittany that I would be seeing Vanessa regardless, because I was helping to save her daughter. My donations would be as frequent as my body and wolf would allow, with only the barest necessary recovery period in between.
Brittany wouldn’t understand. If she couldn’t handle my mere working together with Vanessa, she would be furious if I admit to helping Ava. Even to save a child. She would try to stop it, perhaps even getting my father involved.
For Ava’s sake, I would keep this secret for now.
“I’m not backing out of the contracts for a second time,” I said, “But how about a compromise?”
Brittany crossed her arms. “I’m listening.”
There was only one thing I could do to appease her. “We can move up the date for the mating ceremony.
Her eyes went wide. “Get married sooner…?”
“Yes.”
All of her anger evaporated in a flash, and she jumped toward me. She wrapped her arms around my shoulders and held on tightly, even as she excitedly jumped up and down.
“Ah! This is wonderful!” she shouted. “I have to tell everyone. And the planning! So much planning!”
I lightly patted her pat, trying and failing to mimic her excitement. “I’ll leave the planning to you, if you don’t mind.”
She laughed as she pulled back. “Not only do I not mind, but I insist on it. No offense, Jason, but this moment needs to be perfect. I have an entire vision in my head, and I need to see it realized.”
“Very well.”
“I have to go. I have to make calls. And your parents! I have to tell them too! Oh, this is such great news. Everyone will be so excited!”
