Laila’s POV
A low growl emerged from Jason’s throat, before I even had time to react to what Brittany had done or to her words.
“Drop the act, Brittany,” Jason said coldly. “Everyone knows you’re full of shit. I know it. Vanessa knows it. You know it. You aren’t pregnant. You never were.”
“So what if us three know that,” Brittany scoffed. “The rest of the world thinks we are, so you should act like it too.”
“That’s not how this works. That’s not how anything works.”
“Just ask anyone else. They’ll tell you different.”
“Only if they didn’t know the truth,” Jason countered. “Tell them the truth and watch how it changes.”
Brittany stuck her chin up higher. “Well, it doesn’t matter. Even without a baby, you stay here, ignoring my calls, would still be frowned upon. You are cheating on your mate.”
“Oh, no. No, no,” I said quickly. “Nothing happened like that.”
“Like I’m going to believe that. From you. You already slept with him once, slut. I’m not going to listen to anything you have to say.”
“Don’t talk to her like that,” Jason said.
“Why are you defending her? You should be defending me!”
“She’s not the one attacking you,” Jason said.
“No. She’s the one sleeping with my mate.” Focusing on Jason, Brittany narrowed her eyes. “I wonder how your father will feel when he hears about this. I’m sure it won’t be good for his heart.”
Disgust rose up within me, watching Brittany try to manipulate Jason by using his love of his father. This must have been how Brittany was used to getting her way, leveraging Jason’s love for his family and his pack over his head to get what she wanted.
She had everything she wanted, but she was still fumbling it. Manipulation would never last; it had a shaky foundation of lies
and mistrust.
Love was the ultimate foundation. Whatever this was between Jason and Brittany couldn’t last without it, no matter how much Jason had been willing to sacrifice for his father and his pack.
I tried to convey that to him in a glance, not trusting my voice. He looked back at me, and for a moment, I thought he might be
able to see what I was trying to wordlessly tell him. But then he hardened. He looked back to Brittany.
“Don’t threaten my father.”
“Please. Who cares about that? What you should be concerned with is how you are treating me,” Brittany said. “If you get caught cheating on me, can you imagine the humiliation I’d suffer? I’m not going to be one of those sad women everyone feels sorry for.”
She was more worried about her… reputation?
“If this is going to work at all, you need to not embarrass me,” Brittany said.
“That’s the thing, Brittany,” Jason said. “This isn’t going to work. It isn’t working now. I’m tired of the bullshit and the lies. I’m done. With all of it.”
“No,” Brittany said. “You aren’t.”
Jason growled again, some of his Alpha coming out. It was a known rule that Alphas didn’t like to be told what to do, and

Brittany was steamrolling over that rule like she didn’t care at all.
I already knew she didn Teare about him, but to see him not even consider him was something else.
“I will come back to the pack house with you,” Jason said. “There we will discuss this.”
“With your father?”
“You will leave my father out of this,” Jason said, his voice low and dangerous.
