Her car was parked behind mine, totally blocking the driveway. When she entered her car, she stayed parked there, clearly not about to leave without Jason beside her.

“I’m sorry about this,” Jason said.

“Don’t be,” I told him. “She is still your mate. She should come first, even if the pregnancy is a sham.”

“The entire partnership is a sham,” Jason said. “But I’ll fixit. I’ll fix this. I should have a long time ago.”

He was right, more than he knew. He should have fixed this when had still been Laila. Instead, he had chosen Brittany, and I had to run.

Now, it felt like it might have been too late. I needed to see him actually break up with Brittany, privately and publically, before I would ever believe it.

“Just go,” I said to him.

“There’s nothing to talk about, Jason. Not right now. Please. Just go,” I said. When he still didn’t budge, I added, “Goddess knows what she’ll tell your father without you there. You should go.”

That finally moved him, and he nodded. “Alright. But it’s not because I want to.”

I motioned toward the door and he walked through it. He looked back several times on the way to the car, the lengthiest of this was right before he entered the passenger side.

Then, Brittany backed up and sped away.

Grabbing my bag, I moved toward my own car. I could do nothing for Jason if he wouldn’t do anything for himself. He said he was going to, but that remained to be seen. For now, I needed to just go back to work. This ordeal had delayed me. If I didn’t focus, I would be late.

At work, I had only just sat down at my desk in my office, ready to start the day, when Claire walked in, a worried expression on

“What’s the matter?” I asked her, before she could even say hello. Although to be fair, with how stricken she looked, I wasn’t sure she was going to even acknowledge a greeting instead.

“I don’t even know where to begin,” she said. “I was reading my emails and

My phone started to ring. Normally, in an important conversation like this, I would ignore the call for Claire’s sake, but the phone was showing the call was coming from within the building. Typically only the higher ups would call me.

“You’d better get that,” Claire said. “Maybe they will explain, and you can tell me what’s going on. I don’t want to speculate.”

Warning bells began sounding within me, but still, I answered the phone.

“Hello?”

“Ms. Harper. Your presence is requested in conference room one for an urgent shareholder meeting.”

“Who is this?” I asked, but the call ended, the line clicked.

I lowered the phone. Looking at Claire, I asked, “Do we have new employees?”

“I don’t know,” she said. “Everything is changing.”
