With these numbers, I feel as if a firm hand is needed at this company. So, while it isn’t typical for a shareholder, even the majority one, to be so active in the company’s day to day, I feel like I am needed here, to keep things on track.”

“You intend to be here more regularly?” I asked.

“Yes. Every day, in fact,” Adelaide said. “Better to keep my eye on things from a closer distance, wouldn’t you agree?”

My stomach twisted inside of me, hearing her words as the threat they could only be meant as.

Adelaide might imply that she wanted to keep an eye on the financials of the company, but I believed she was instead determined to keep an eye on me and my investigation.

She had to be involved. Or know who was. I was positive about that.

“Yes,” I said, pushing the word past my teeth. “It will be nice seeing you so often.”

“I agree.”

I stepped out of the meeting room carrying a new kind of weight. Uncertainty. Fear.

Despite the relative safety of the office, I felt like I had when I had been in that parking lot being chased, uncertain where to turn, who to reach out to for safety.

My mind wandered to Jason, but after this morning, I wasn’t willing to bother him with this.

I wasn’t in any real danger, not here. Not yet. I just needed to be careful.

Adelaide would be watching me. I couldn’t forget that.

My office should have been a safe harbor for me, but the minute I returned, a person from the IT department was sitting at my desk, typing away at my keyboard.

“What’s this?” I asked him as I approached.

“Ah, Ms. Harper. Forgive the intrusion, but our new shareholder insisted that this new software be added to every employee’s computer. Even yours.”

“What kind of software?”

“It will track everything that you do. Every webpage you access. It will even track your typing, or send a notice if you don’t touch your computer for too long.”

“That seems pretty invasive,” I said.

“Yeah,” the IT person said. “It is. But that’s what she wants.”

“I’m sure she gave a reason?”

“She wants to ensure the employees stay on task,” he said. “That’s what I was told anyway.”

I couldn’t argue with a man simply doing his job, but this was an invasion of privacy, even at the workplace. I couldn’t go against

it without seeming overly suspicious though. Adelaide likely knew that.

It seemed as if her attention was fully on me now.

I had to be more careful.

But maybe it was already too late.
