Chapter 189
Jason’s POV
I kept my eye on the father as we entered the house, moving toward the living room. There, he didn’t sit down, just sort of hovered in the middle of the room. I did as well, not sitting if he wouldn’t. Brittany, following us, happily sat on the couch. She bent her knees and tucked her ankles under her side like an eager schoolgirl who was looking forward to the gossip.
“Dad,” I started.
“I know what happened, son. And while I’m not thrilled about it, I can understand you have been under some… pressure. It makes sense to want to blow off some steam.”
“Dad. What are you even talking about?”
“You know what I mean. You have… stepped out… of your relationship with Brittany.”
Having any kind of sex conversation with Dad was bad enough – Gods, I still remember the disaster that was our birds and bees talk — but being an adult having it was somehow even worse.
“Mate bonding can be difficult, son,” Dad said. “But you can’t give up on it. You have to keep working at it.”
“This conversation really isn’t necessary –
“Wait here,” Dad said. “There’s someone I want you to meet.”
As he stepped out of the room, I glanced over at Brittany to see her grinning smugly.
“You know about all this,” I said.
She shrugged. “What does it matter if I did? It wouldn’t change anything.”
I hated the way it felt like she was constantly plotting against me. Even if I had wanted to work things out with her, which I didn’t anymore, this wasn’t the way we could have gone about/it.
Brittany didn’t care about problem resolution. All she ever wanted was for her to be right. How could I have been so blind to her efforts in the past? Even when I had first met her, at that mate gala, she had seen in me only what I could do for her, and not what we could mean to each other?
I had been wrong to feed into any of her delusions, and Laila had paid the price for it.
I wasn’t going to allow Vanessa to suffer like Laila had, just to keep Brittany happy. No matter what ideas Dad had planned for us.
middle.
A moment later, I discovered exactly what Dad had planned, when he returned to the room with a middle–aged werewolf woman at his side. The woman wore a smart pantsuit and had her graying brown hair pulled back into a tight bun. Cat–eye glasses covered a pair of probing eyes on an otherwise serious face. She carried a small notebook and a pen.
“This is Ms. Melody,” Dad said, gesturing toward the woman. “She is a relationship counselor. The best in the business, from what I’ve heard. Pricey too. But there can be no expensive spared for this. Your mate bond with Brittany is too important.”
“I’m eager to help you,” Melody said. “Your father has briefed me on the situation, and I truly believe that your relationship can be saved.”
If she was as pricey as Dad had said, then I had no doubt she would say so. Maybe she even believed it too. Unfortunately, I had no such confidence.
“I really don’t think this is necessary,” ” I said.
“Please, son,” Dad said.
“No, Dad. This thing with Brittany is not going to work.”

“It has to, or the pack will fall apart.”
“It won’t-”
“It will,” Dad said emphatically, and then with his face twisting in pain, he placed his hand over his heart.
“Dad…”
“Stop upsetting him,” Brittany said, jumping to her feet. “His heart can’t take it.”
My own chest aching, I backed off. “Should I call an ambulance?”
