The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 192

But I knew, deep down, that my job performance wasn’t what she was keeping an eye on. The tracker on my computer would give her a report of my entire search history. If I even attempted to research anything related to Vanessa’s parentsaccident or Adelaide herself, she would know about it.

Given that things had gotten dangerous for me, I couldn’t let her know. I had no reason to trust she was innocent and every reason to suspect her. I had to be careful with this.

At the end of the day, I had stayed only an extra few minutes to finish my work. I’d already sent Claire home, but there were other employees putting in overtime too. I wasn’t alone, else I wouldn’t have stayed.

After finishing, I turned off my computer and stood. I gathered my things and then stepped out of my office, moving toward the elevator.

Oddly, there were a pair of men there that I didn’t recognize, waiting on either side of the elevator. They were both wide- chested men, burly, with strong arms. They looked like they could be bouncers standing outside of a nightclub, not allowing anyone but the highest of celebrity entrance.

I had no idea what they were doing here, but gained some insight as I approached and saw their official security badges. Adelaide, it seemed, had made quite a few new hirings on her own, without informing anyone else or at least, without telling

me

Seeing they were official security, I tried not to give them too much attention. I weaved between them and pressed the button for the elevator. Neither of them looked at me, so my confidence started to grow. Whatever they were here for, it wasn’t for me.

Or so I thought.

When the elevator dinged and the door opened, I stepped inside. To my horror, the two security guards stepped into the elevator with me. One pressed the button for the first floor.

I started forward to leave the elevator. I think I forget

The doors closed before I could leave, locking me in this small box with these two large men. I stood back against the far wall, trying to be calm. Maybe they just needed to go downstairs too. There still wasn’t evidence that this was about me at all. YetI was starting to get more and more nervous about it.

When the door opened, they stepped out first, then stopped at the sides of the elevator, just as they had before. Not letting my concern show, I stepped out of the elevator, stepping between the men, and then out of the building toward the parking lot.

The men started walking at the same pace as me, staying slightly behind me.

I walked faster; they did too. I started running; they jogged to keep up.

From a distance, I unlocked my car, then when I reached it, I threw open the door, hopped inside and slammed the door closed behind me. I locked the doors, just as the men reached my car, standing on either side of it. They peered in through the windows, their faces devoid of all emotion, like they were utterly detached.

Now that I was inside and they were out, they froze, not moving, just staring at me.

Quickly, I turned the car on and backed out of the spot. They stayed still, watching me as I pulled out of the parking spot and then put the car in drive. Even as I drove away, I saw in the rearview window how they watched me.

They didn’t have to say a word to know what this was. They were official security, hired by Adelaide. They had followed me, but didn’t touch me.

The message was loud and clear: You are being watched. You can’t hide or escape.
