The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 194

You should end things, if that is your wish,Mom said.

It is,I said at once.

But I ask you to wait until after your father’s surgery.

Dad had a planned openheart surgery in a couple of weeks, a procedure in which the healers intended to boost the remaining strength of Dad’s wolf by injecting wolf essence straight into his heart chambers. It was a delicate process, and Dad would need to be strong for it.

They’d put it off so long already, with each episode Dad had become upset. But with each delay came new danger.

They couldn’t keep pushing this off. Dad needed this surgery.

For this, for Dad’s sake, I knew I had to wait.

Mom watched me with hopeful eyes, which I had no defense against.

I will wait until after the surgery,I said.

Closing her eyes, Mom sighed in relief.

But,I said, for my own sake. As far as I am concerned, my marriage to Brittany is over. We may remain connected on the surface for now but I will be moving forward behind the public’s eye to disconnect her from my life.

Mom nodded. I understand. Is Brittany aware?

I told her I want a divorce,I said. Trust me, she knows. This will not come as a shock to her at all.

Brittany’s POV

I stood at the base of the stairs, hidden from Sarah and Jason’s view but hearing every treacherous word. They thought they were being so quiet, but words traveled far in this house. Mine wasn’t the strongest wolf, a fact which I hid by rarely shifting, but I still had excellent hearing. Especially when Jason was threatening my future. My livelihood.

If Jason got what he wanted, it seemed that my days as Luna were numbered.

He always did underestimate me.

With the conversation at the top of the stairs winding down, I turned away and silently retreated before I could be seen or sensed. If Jason had reached out his senses, he would have felt me there. That he hadn’t, or hadn’t cared if I heard, were enough to tell me that he didn’t see me as a threat to him.

He was a fool.

Maybe he didn’t love me, but what did love matter in politics? I was the strongest candidate for Luna in the pack! Who was he hoping to replace me with? Vanessa? She wasn’t even a pack member. Did she even have a wolf?

I wasn’t going to be replaced by such a nobody.

Most of the pack loved me, the beautiful perfect picture of a Luna. When we announced that I was pregnant, I had gained even more support

It wasn’t enough. At least not to sway Jason.

I had one last card to play, to gather love from the remaining members of the pack who had yet to give it. Or, at least, to gain their sympathy.

If I had that, the people would riot if they discovered Jason was planning on leaving me. He would have to come crawling back to me, pathetic and miserable, begging me to save him and his reputation.

Please, Brittany. Take me back, I’m a fool for ever thinking I could do this without you.

I walked into one of the side offices that I had been given as a curtesy as Luna. Supposedly, I had been given this room to help with my more formal Luna duties, like planning parties or making political calls that would help benefit the pack and Jason. But why should the Luma dirty her hands? I had assistants for all of that.

So the room sat mostly empty, with only the cleaning staff coming in now and again to remove the dust. Now, though, it had

purpose.
