Jason’s POV
“What’s all that noise, Mommy? Ava asked from her hospital bed. She was doing well, with Jason’s help, enough that the doctor’s believed she might be able to be discharged soon.
1 glanced over to the door. A lot of people had passed by the window in the passed hour, trickling in with a steady pace, but now it seemed like they were all leaving at once. Through the window, I noticed many of them had camera equipment.
Reporters?
I suddenly had a very bad feeling about this, a dark pit opening up in my stomach. Maybe I was paranoid, but I hoped everything was okay with Jason and his pack. Anytime I saw the media lately, it seemed as if he was involved.
At least, this time, the reporters weren’t looking for me or Ava. They passed by the door, talking, not paying any attention to what was going on behind this door.
“I don’t know, honey. Why don’t I take a look?”
“Okay,” Ava said.
I left behind the book I had been reading and went to the door. As I stepped into the hall, most of the reporters and their crew had already passed. As the last of the crews went by, not paying me any attention, they said to each other.
“What a tragedy. And for the Alpha to be at fault?”
“Do you think his reputation can survive this? It was already in the tank.”
“I don’t know.”
My heart stopped at the talk of an Alpha, and then started to race forward at an unsteady, fast–paced rhythm. This close to Jason’s pack lands, they could only be talking about him.
But what had Jason done? What had happened? How could he be at fault?
I needed those answers, my chest already aching for him and I didn’t even know the reason yet.
While the reporters went toward the exit, I turned down the way they had come from, searching for the source of this news, to try to find some hint of what had happened.
The very last reporter stepped out of one of the patient rooms, tucking a tape recorder into his suit jacket pocket. He shook his head as he walked by me, not even glancing up at me.
I stepped forward and peeked into the room.

Brittany was there, standing up from the hospital bed. She wore loose fitting clothes, which was odd for her. As was the mascara streaking down her cheeks like she had been crying. She was smiling now, as she stretched.
Anger sparked within me. What kind of show had she just put on for those cameras, crying in a hospital bed? Clearly she was fine. Happy, even.
Yet without knowing the facts, I was uncertain if I should confront her.
She made the decision for me when she turned and caught me peeking into her room.
“Vanessa, I was hoping you would be around to see my shining victory.”
“What did you do?” I asked.
“If you really want to know, come in and close the door. Or you could just watch it on the news later.”

I hated being caught in her game, but I couldn’t just walk away without knowing what she had done this time. So I stepped into the room and closed the door behind me as she had directed.
When I turned to face her, her grin was entirely smug.
“What did you do?” I asked again.
