“You always were crass,” Adelaide said. She lifted her head slightly to peer down the length of her nose at me. High and mighty

as ever.

“Tell me where my daughter is,” I said again, allowing all of my anger to seep into my voice. I clutched my hands into fists, ready to tear this place – and them – apart if necessary

I didn’t usually lose my temper like this. Years of working in an industry that relied on networking and partnership had trained me to be calm in every occasion.

But this was different. This wasn’t some merger or contract on the line. This was my daughter.

“If you would wait and listen to me,” Adelaide said, sighing like I was the one being unreasonable. “Geoffrey here and I have been good friends for a long time.”

“Years,” the hospital president, Geoffrey presumably, said, looking pleased like he was helping.

“I knew your daughter had been sick for a long time, Vanessa,” Adelaide said. “Poor little thing. I know you were trying your best with your means. And I’m not disparaging this finely run hospital at all when I say, she always needed more specialized help.

“No offense taken,” Geoffrey said.

I shook my head. I didn’t care about Adelaide’s digs at me right now. I just wanted my daughter. “Where is she?”

“She’s being transported to a specialist as we speak,” Geoffrey said. “Once the request was made, I pushed it through at once. He grinned like he was proud of himself. “You are very welcome, of course, for this curtesy.”

“‘Curtesy?“” I repeated, appalled. “I didn’t give permission! I was never consulted! I don’t even know who this specialist is!” “Surely you need the mother’s permission before you can move her daughter?” Riley added, glaring from my side.

“And who are you?” Adelaide said, her eyes narrowing. “You aren’t family. This is a family matter.” She looked at me. “I gave consent for you, dear. As is my right.”

“It is definitely not your right. I am the only one who can make medical decisions for my child,” I insisted.

“Must you always be so difficult?” Adelaide said.

“I want to see Ava. Now,” I said. “Or I will call the police.”

“The police chief is a good friend of mine,” Adelaide said. “It would be nice to speak to him again. I haven’t in years.”

I paled slightly, realizing she could mean since the last time she needed him, when Vanessa’s parents had been killed and she had wanted it covered up.

Was she threatening to do the same thing now? Was Ava already beyond saving?

“Please,” I said, some of my anger melting away into desperation. “Take me to her.”

“Of course, I’d be happy to,” Adelaide said, smiling again like she had never made a threat. Like I was just a foolish girl. “You only needed to ask.”

“Who is this specialist?” Riley asked.

“Healer Griffin,” said Geoffrey. “He’s very reputable. He’s helped many children with otherwise irreversible conditions.”

“Ava’s condition isn’t irreversible. She is getting better,” I said.

“How would you know?” Riley snapped. “When have you ever visited?”

“If Healer Griffin was an option, why haven’t I been told about him before? I’d never even heard of him.”

“He’s a private man,” Adelaide said.

“He’s supposed to be a specialist,” Riley scoffed. “How does he get patients?”

“Adelaide is trying to be gentle,” Geoffrey said. “She’s saying that Healer Griffin is exceedingly expensive. Only a few families in the entire continent could actually afford his care. If Adelaide didn’t offer to bankroll this entire exchange, we never would have brought it up to regular people.”
