Chapter 210

“Don’t be ridiculous,” she laughed.
I felt a presence coming from the stairwell behind us. Turning, I saw those two security guards from the office approaching.
“My car,” Adelaide said. “I really must insist.”
Swallowing hard, I knew I didn’t have much choice. Adelaide started toward the elevator, and I went with her, the two guards following. Riley and Geoffrey stayed behind, Riley’s worried eyes on me, Geoffrey just vaguely smiling.
As we waited for the elevator, I pulled my phone from my pocket. Adelaide glanced but didn’t try to stop me,
didn’t
say a word.
I unlocked my phone and called Jason.
The line rang and rang, then went to voicemail. He never picked up.
Jason’s POV
At the end of my day, I returned to the pack house, ready to relax. Yet, as soon as I walked through the door, Brittany intercepted me, almost like she had been waiting for me, peeking out the windows whenever a car came close.
“Jason, I was hoping we could talk.”
“There’s nothing to talk about,” I said, and tried to sidestep around her. She moved into my path, and then again as I attempted to go the other way. It seemed I was trapped without touching and physically moving her. Given her track record for accusing me
of things, I wasn’t going to lay a single hand on her in any circumstance. “Brittany, get out of the way.”
“Please, Jason. I won’t try to convince you of anything. I know your mind is made up. I just want to apologize.”
Her eyes were downcast, with tears lining her lashes. She was a good actor, I knew that. This was how she had convinced so many people that she was pregnant, and then that she had lost the baby – for which, she was blaming our bond, my distance
from her.
I had no reason to trust her, and I didn’t. But. If she was ready to accept her own faults, perhaps this entire processes could be easier. If she could agree to a divorce, then it could be handled smoothly and quickly. Maybe I could fulfill my promise to Vanessa sooner than either of us expected.
“Fine,” I said. “We can talk.”
“Good,” she said, hope filling her eyes. “I’ve already asked the servants to bring us some tea in the sitting room.”
“Fine,” I said, and followed her.

In one of the sitting rooms where we usually entertained guests, she sat down on the couch. She patted the seat next to her like she wanted me to sit there, but I wasn’t going to do that. Instead, I went to the open high–back chair across from the couch, on the other side of the coffee table.
One of the servants brought in a tray of tea and set it down on the table.
“Thank you,” I told her, leaning forward.
“Allow me to pour for you,” Brittany said.
“That’s not necessary.”
“Please, Jason. I’m trying to apologize.”
I rubbed my forehead and leaned back. “Fine.”
She poured the tea, added a bit of sugar how I liked it, and then passed the cup to me. I sipped. It tasted good, if not slightly bitter still. Did it need more sugar? I’d just watched her put in quite a bit.

“I know I’ve been acting in a way that isn’t becoming for a Luna,” Brittany said. “It’s my jealousy. It always gets the better of me. You are supposed to be my mate, but I’ve never been the first woman in your heart. Now, I don’t even think I’m the second.”
