The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 211

Chapter 211

Laila’s POV

I sat in the backseat of Adelaide limousine next to her. One of the guards sat on the seat that went along the right side of the long car. The other was upfront with the driver, hidden from us by the partition.

Tapping my foot nervously, I could barely sit still. Aya, my daughter, was in danger. What if Adelaide had done something to her? Or had asked someone else to? What would I do, where would I even begin? I needed to see her, to make sure she was okay. If she wasn’t, I would never be okay again either.

But I couldn’t accuse Adelaide in any kind of open way. Even if she hadn’t hurt Ava yet, she was still the only person who knew where she was. I needed Adelaide to cooperate with me. And I was also afraid that if I pissed her off, she would hurt Ava after the

fact.

Please,I said softly. Just tell me that my daughter is safe.

Why wouldn’t she be?Adelaide asked, scoffing. Ava is an innocent little girl. I never cared for children granted, but I don’t like this implication of yours that I w

I would ever hurt someone innocent.

Her words did little to put me at ease. She would never hurt someone innocent? What about people she perceived as guilty? And why was she the judge of who was innocent and who wasn’t?

But I didn’t dare speak up, worried that pressing the issue too much would enrage Adelaide, who seemed comfortable right now. If she was angry, she might lash out, and with Ava in her clutches, I couldn’t risk her being hurt.

Really, Vanessa. When did you start to assume the worst in me?Adelaide asked. Aren’t family supposed to be there for each other? Yet, you started all this with your snooping. Your parents are dead, let them rest in peace. There’s no reason to stir up old memories.

I placed my hands flat on my thighs, afraid to move one inch in a way she might dislike.

She sighed, looking out the window. Even now, you remain suspicious, when all I want to do is help your precious daughter. Healer Griffin is the best in his field.

Why haven’t I heard of him?I asked.

She scoffed. How should I know? Maybe you haven’t done enough research. It’s not my fault if you are a poor mother, and I shouldn’t be punished for that. For being responsible in a way you cannot be.

Please.

I’m taking you to her,Adelaide snapped. That should be enough for you.”

I couldn’t argue that, not when anything I said seemed to only make things worse, so I looked out the window instead, trying to track our direction and our movements, mapping in my head where we were and where we were going, in case I needed to use that information later.

Adelaide might have been bringing me here willingly enough, but I had suspicions about whether she would be as accommodating when I wanted to leave. Especially as I had no intention of allowing Ava to stay in a strange place, whether this healer was reputable or not.

An escape plan would come later though. Right now, I just needed to see Ava with my own eyes, to know that she was safe. That she was okay. That she wasalive.

The car pulled into a small parking lot, the long limo barely able to navigate the tight cornered turns as it pulled to the front of what appeared to be a small clinic. There were no distinguishing signs out front, and only two cars in the parking lot

Overhead, clouds were gathering in the sky, casting the afternoon in an evening light darkness.
