I tried to school my face, but I knew right away that I hadn’t been quick enough. The truth of what I thought about that must have been clear, if only for a moment.

I tried the door again, harder this time. It still didn’t budge. Before I could put my full weight into it, Adelaide lifted her chin at me and her goons stepped forward, one grabbing each of my arms. They wrenched me away from the door.

“It’s time to be done with this,” Adelaide said. “I’ve been kind to you for far too long.”

One of the goons pulled out a knife from his belt. From the way it glinted, I could tell it was made of silver. There would be no coming back from that. Not for a human. Not for a werewolf.

“The last thing I want is for that young girl to have to walk through a bloodstained hallway,” Adelaide said. “Take her out back, near the dumpsters. Dispose of her with the trash where she belongs.”

I struggled against the goons but they held fast to my arms.

“You can’t!” I shouted, hoping someone would hear. The receptionist? “You won’t get away with this!”

“I already have,” Adelaide said. “The world will think you ran out on your little girl, overwhelmed by your responsibilities. I will swoop in, the thoughtful protector and raise Ava as my ward ”

“You are sick,” I growled.

She shrugged, and gestured for the guards to move. They did at once, dragging me down the hallway.

I couldn’t allow this to happen. For myself. For Ava. For every minute of hardship that we’d endured to be where we were. Was I really going to let Adelaide and these two goons take all of that away?
