The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 215

Jason’s POV

Something wasn’t right with me. My body was sluggish, with darkness swarming at the edge of my vision. I fought hard to stay awake, when sleep seemed so very tempting. My mind struggled to focus, but I knew, distinctly, even if I couldn’t remember why, that I needed to gather my thoughts.

Pain was slicing through my chest. While this helped me stay conscious, I felt as if I was being torn apart. I lifted my hands to my chest and looked down, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Despite how it felt on the inside, on the outside, I appeared perfectly fine.

But then why did I feel this way?

Pushing through the fog in my mind, I tried to focus on the pain to properly identify it. I wasn’t having a heart attack, even though my pulse was thundering and my adrenaline was starting to kick up a notch.

I was afraid, but why?

Brittany was herebut I didn’t fear Brittany. Even like this, I knew I could defend myself. I wouldn’t allow her to hurt me.

No, this fear wasn’t for myself. It was for someone else.

Who?

Think, Jason. Damn it.

With a flash, I realized this fear wasn’t my own. Through a bond deep inside of me, I was sharing fear with someone else. Through the mating bond?

But Brittany was right here. I peered up at her through unfocused eyes. I couldn’t see fully, but she didn’t seem distressed. Though my bond with Brittany had never been particularly strong. I wasn’t sure even if she had been in danger that I would have been alerted in such a visceral way.

Gods, it felt as if my heart was tearing through my chest.

My wolf growled, fighting as I was against the fog that kept us trapped.

We have to save her! She’s in trouble!

Who?

Our mate!

Ourmate?

How foolish I had been to think for even a moment that Brittany might have been the one who needed us. A bond like this could only connect me to my true mate, someone that Brittany never was. Could never hope to be.

That role had been filled by Laila. But Laila was dead.

Who else could?

I blinked, my vision clearing. And I knew without a doubt who was in danger, the name sparking in my mind like I had been struck by a bolt of lightning

Vanessa.

Just like that, all of haze in my mind cleared. Whatever had been darkening my vision disappeared. I had instantly sobered.

Pushing up from the chair, I stood.

Brittany gasped, looking at me. Jason?

You’ll pay for whatever you just did to me,I said, and truly wished there was more time to deal with her now. But with Vanessa in danger, anything to do with Brittany was my lowest possible priority. You had better hope I reach Vanessa in time.

Brittany blanched as I turned away. I rushed out of the sitting room and to the front door. Tearing it open, I darted outside. Rain pelted down at me. A crash of thunder echoed so loudly I could feel it in my bones.

Roaring, I shifted then ran forward on my paws. Inside of me, I could feel the bond connecting me to Brittany. It was so prevalent, burning so brightly. I felt it stronger than I ever had with Brittany. This was closer to how I felt with Laila

Though it seemed even stronger.

My wolf and I pushed hard through the thunderstorm, racing past all of our previous limits as we rushed to reach our mate in time.

Hold on, Vanessa. Fight. Stay alive.

I will find you.
