Chapter 216
They called after me. They chased me as I rushed into the nearby woods.
Everything in my body was begging for me to turn around, to go back for Ava. But I couldn’t. To go back would mean I would die, and how could I help Ava if I was/dead? Hustead, I had to push forward, to fight for survive, and then I could return when I would be fully healthy and unexpected.
My wolf, too, fought against her instincts. To leave without Ava felt wrong down to the bone.
But Adelaide had seemed earnest about wanting to keep Ava safe. For now at least, I didn’t think she would harm her.
I was the one who would die if I didn’t go back.
Dizzy, I ran as fast as I could, pushing through the trees, no looking back as my heart cracked and I howled in fnisery.
The guards were still chasing me. They could still catch me. I could still die here tonight.
But then, in the distance, a howl answered my own. And if was familiar.
Jason?
Adjusting my direction, I raced toward him instead. As we drew closer, I could sense him.
The guards backed off then, I thought. It was getting more difficult to tell. I trusted Jason would be able to see them if they were still there. For now, I just had to get to him. He would protect me.
My other, previous fears and doubts meant nothing in this moment of true fear and panic.
When we finally met, we both shifted and I collapsed in his arms.
He brushed the hair from my face.

“Vanessa, what’s going on?” Worry shone brightly in his eyes, even here in the dark, with the world raging, thundering and raining in earnest.
I opened my mouth to speak, but no sound came out of my mouth.
Jason’s anxious eyes searched my face. His hands tightened on my elbows. He was all that was keeping me upright now. When had my body gotten so very heavy?
My knees stopped working and buckled. Jason caught me around the waist, and I cried out, shrieking as pain seared through my
r body.
“Vanessa?”
I clawed onto his shoulders. There might have been tears in my eyes, but it could have been the rain pooling there. I just couldn’t
tell anymore.
Gently, he eased me down to the ground, but didn’t allow my back to touch. Instead, he rolled me onto my side.
He didn’t have to say a word about what he saw. I felt his sharp spike of fear and concern shooting through the bond. The bond that I could no longer deny existed.
Jason was, and likely had always been, my true mate. What a cruel fate to discover that now, as my body was going numb.
He lifted me into his lap. Lightly, he tapped my cheek, every time I even thought about closing my eyes. But the weight of my eyelids was growing too much, too fast. I didn’t think I’d be able to keep them open for long.
I’d been stabbed. I knew that now.
In my desperate panic to escape, the adrenaline had held back the pain. Or maybe my wolf had taken the brunt of it in an effort

to protect me.
Regardless, I could feel it now, with the darkness closing in. Yet even in the neat pitch black, I could see the light in Jason’s eyes as he looked down at me.
“Don’t…” he whispered, but I didn’t have much choice.
Clutching his arm in desperation, I forced one word past my lips.
