Jason’s POV
My growl must have risen to a high enough volume for Adelaide to detect, because she still her hand, and for the first time that I had ever seen in her, she appeared stricken, her face paling, her eyes growing wide.
She turned and rushing to her car, leaped into the driver’s seat, ignoring the driver who had been holding the back seat open for her, ready and waiting.
She left Ava in the rain, though the girl immediately ran back towards the clinic, hiding from the rain under the cover of the canopy out front.
Knowing she was safely out of the way gave me room to act.
Adelaide slammed on the gas and the car tore forward through the parking lot.
Still growling, I stepped out of the shadows and directly into her path. She didn’t attempt to slow down, even as I could tell she saw me. Did she really think I would lose in a battle of wills against a car?
I was so confident, I even shifted back to my human form, wanting her to be able to recognize who I was, who she was up against.
The car accelerated, barreling for me, the tires screeching on the pavement.
I waited. Waited. Waited, for the car to get nearer, for the opening I needed.
I knew she wouldn’t swerve. A woman like this, she would try to kill me. Why wouldn’t she? I was firmly convinced she had killed her sister and brother–in–law. Maybe she herself hadn’t stabbed Vanessa, but I was certain she ordered someone else to, if she hadn’t.
Then – now.
Bracing my legs, I reached both arms forward just as the car came within range. I speared my arms through the hood of the car, grabbed the hot engine, and, with a roar, tore the entire engine out of the car.
The car veered sideways, turning over. I chucked the still running engine in the opposite direction. It smashed onto the ground with a hiss.
Stalking toward where the car had stopped, I was prepared to end Adelaide once and for all. Yet as I came closer, I could see she had hit her head. Some blood dripped out of a cut. She was upside down, her arms dangling, her eyes closed. Unconscious.
“Alpha… Jason…?” Ava cried from the doorway to the clinic.
I looked back at her. Blinking, my red vision slowly cleared.

She pushed out from under the canopy and ran toward me, pumping her little legs as fast as they would go. She flung out her arms midway and cried, “Daddy!”
In response, all I could do was fall to one knee and open my own arms, ready and willing to accept her hug. She threw herself into my arms and I closed them around her, holding her trembling little body close. I forced my muscles to relax, not wanting her to feel my tension. I hoped all of her mother’s blood had washed out of my clothes in the rain.
She buried her face in my shoulder, her arms worming around my neck. She sobbed loudly, without words, her whole body shaking
“It’s okay,” I said, trying to keep my voice gentle. Having growled so much, though, it was rough and uneven. “You are safe
now.‘
I had no more evidence in this moment than I had in the last that Ava was my daughter. Yet, inside, similar to the bond that connected me to Vanessa, recognizing her as my mate, I recognized Ava as my child. Maybe it was just sharp protective
