As the police exited their vehigles, I gestured toward Adelaide’s car “She’s the one responsible.”
Her driver was trying to sneak away nearby, but he was quickly captured.
“There are two more somewhere,” I said. “Possibly more.” Riley had said that when Vanessa had left the hospital with Adelaide, she’d had two more guards with her.
No one was going to escape my wrath.
“There could be more in the clinic,” I added.
The police spread out. A bit later, the emergency healers arrived in an ambulance. The first ambulance took Adelaide, after the police pried her from the car. A few officers went with them, likely to arrest Adelaide the minute she woke up.
When the second ambulance arrived, I insisted Ava be checked out.
We rode that ambulance back to the hospital, where Riley met us. Her entire face crumpled with relief seeing Ava unharmed.
“She’s okay,” I said. “The healers checked her out and there’s no new problems.”
Ava herself, curled up against my side, held there by one of my arms, was fast asleep. She’d had a traumatic time. It was good for her to heal.
Any word on Vanessa?” I asked.
“She’s still in surgery,” Riley said. “The healers said it could be hours. They have to try to remove the traces of silver, and that’s a delicate process.”
I nodded. Maybe I should have taken Ava to a room for her to rest, but after all that happened, I wanted her near me. With how her little fist was curled tightly in my shirt, I imagined she felt the same way.
We moved to the waiting room and took a te wait. And pray.
Riley glanced at Ava, then at me.

She had been Vanessa’s friend for a long time. Before that, she had been Laila’s.
I’d suspected from the start that she knew more than she ever said about Vanessa and about Laila. I found that frustrating, though I couldn’t begrudge her for being a good friend, especially when Laila and now Vanessa seemed to need those so badly.
But, with the new bonds being formed inside of me, it made me wonder if Riley knew the truth.
“Riley,” I asked, careful to keep my voice low to not disturb Ava. “Do you have any idea who Ava’s father really is?”
Riley’s
‘s gaze darted away from me quickly. Quick enough to be suspicious, but still not enough evidence to prove anything.
“Is it me?” I asked. “Is Laila…?”
She blanched. “Laila died a long time ago.‘

I didn’t know if I believed that anymore, but even if it was true, even if Laila and Vanessa were different people, Ava could still be my child. Vanessa could have adopted her, or… There were possibilities. There had to be.
“The only way I would be able to donate wolf essence to Ava is if she is blood related to me,” I said. “Maybe Laila is dead. Maybe she isn’t. But I believe Ava is her child… and mine.”
Riley lowered her head, hiding much of her face. What I did see looked partially worried, partially guilty.
“I can’t confirm or deny anything for you, Alpha. I’m sorry. When she wakes up, this is something you should talk to Vanessa
