Focusing on Jason’s voice, I tried to follow it, eventually climbing out of the darkness and back into the light.

I blinked open my eyes, but they burned from the sudden shift from black to white. I blinked a few times more, trying to adjust my vision.

Oddly, I could tell my back was injured, but I didn’t really feel the pain when I was awake. Whatever painkillers I had been given appeared to be working, at least for now.

Glancing around, I saw the machines hooked to me, the IV, the hospital bed and room, with Jason beside me.

For a moment, I wondered if I had died, but I could see now that I was very much alive. Somehow…? No. I remembered Jason finding me. How had he found me? Hadn’t he been with Brittany?

And where was Ava?!

In a flash of panic, I tried to push myself up on the bed.

“Vanessa? Easy. Easy now.” Jason placed his hands on my shoulders, and gently held me down to the bed. He didn’t have to use my strength. I could barely move on my own, much less shove myself out of this bed. No matter how hard I wanted to, or how hard I tried.

“Ava!” I gasped.

“She’s safe,” Jason said.

I searched his eyes for any hint of deception but saw he meant the words. I exhaled deeply as he explained.

“After you passed out, I brought you here. Riley told me what happened and after confronting the hospital president, who isn’t the president anymore I assure you, I went after Adelaide and found Ava. Ava is safe. Unharmed. She’s resting in the waiting room. Adelaide is here too, somewhere, but she’s going to be arrested the minute she’s awake.”

I listened, but it took a few moments for me to fully understand. “It’s over?”

“It’s over,” Jason said. “We still have to prove that Adelaide killed your parents, but with Claire’s uncle’s help, we should be able to. While we get that case together, she’s definitely going to jail for what happened here. For kidnapping Ava. For nearly killing you.”

That was a relief, and for a moment, I closed my eyes and just breathed.

Yet the moment of comfort didn’t last very long, when I remembered the phone call with Brittany.

I opened my eyes again. “How did you find me? Weren’t you with Brittany?”

His face hardened.

“She said you were… The sounds in the background…”

“She drugged me,” he said.

I swallowed hard. “She… You… Did you…?”

“No,” he said firmly. “She played p**n on the television to deceive you. I could hardly move until I felt your fear. That sobered ‘me. I won’t let her get away with what she’d done.”

How curious that Brittany chose that night to drug him, the same night Ava was being moved and I was attacked. It was almost as if she had known it would happen and didn’t want Jason to interfere. But that couldn’t be… could it?

“I’m moving forward with the divorce as soon as possible,” Jason said. “I’m not waiting for anything, even my father’s surgery. After this, I’m hoping even he will understand why I can’t stay with her.”

“Good,” I said. I didn’t know what kind of relationship I wanted with Jason, or what any future might look like for us. But even if we never talked again, I wouldn’t want him to be with Brittany, a woman who could drug him just to get what she wants. She clearly didn’t actually love him at all.

He deserved love.
