Laila’s POV
Jason waited for his answer.
I was totally stunned, looking at him. I had no idea what to say. Maybe it was time. Maybe he deserved to know the truth. But it was difficult. I had been keeping the secret for so long.
And what if he tried to take Ava from me?
Yet before I could say a word or make a decision either way, the door to my room opened and William burst inside. A nurse was following him.
“Sir, she is to have only one visitor at a time!”
Looking directly at Jason, William said, “That visitor is going to be me.”
Jason straightened, his face hardening. The gentleness he had shown toward me entirely vanished as he faced William.
“I was speaking with Vanessa on an important matter,” Jason said, steely. “And I won’t have that be interrupted by anyone.”
“An important matter?‘ She just woke up!” William scoffed. “You don’t even give her a moment of rest before bombarding her with questions?”
“It’s fine, William,” I said.
“No, it isn’t,” William insisted. “I heard about what happened. You could have died. Instead this man continues to bring danger to your door.”
“This wasn’t his fault,” I said. “Adelaide made her move. She tried to take Ava, and kill me. If Jason hadn’t found me when he did, I might have died.”
“Regardless,” William said firmly, clearly unwilling to allow this matter to drop. “He isn’t giving you time to recover and rest. That is endangering you too. Silver wounds are no joke. Plus, your heart monitor is going crazy.”
“William

“No,” Jason said, cutting me short. “He’s right. It was wrong of me to put this on you so soon after all you went through.” He avoided looking at me. “Rest. Get healthy again. Then we can talk. Excuse me.”
Jason gave me one last look, a touch of sadness and regret in his eyes now. Then he turned, moved around William and left the room. The nurse went with him, a look of relief on her face that no one was breaking the rules anymore. [
William closed the door behind them, then walked over to me.
I was only partially relieved to see him. Yes, he had saved me from a difficult conversation with Jason, at least for now, giving me time to think of a proper answer. But, at the same time, things remained tense between us, and I also wasn’t overly happy about the way he tried to dictate my life.
Maybe he had been right to point out to Jason that now wasn’t the time for this conversation, but ultimately, the decision should have been mine to make. I hated not being in charge of my own time, and my own destiny.
But there was little I could do about it right now. Instead, I just sighed, feeling exhausted.

Are you alright?” William asked.
“Not really.”
“I don’t know why Riley let him come back here first. He was clearly upsetting you.”
“It’s not Riley’s fault. Jason saved my life. I almost died in his arms. It makes sense that he would want to make sure I am alive.”

“I suppose.” William’s jaw locked. After a moment, he said, “He said he was talking to you about something important.”
I looked down at where Faced my fingers together on my lap, atop the hospital blankets covering me. “I think he knows. He asked me if Ava is his daughter.
William straightened. “Did you tell him?”
