“Clearly not. Jason will take custody of Ava away from you…”
“We don’t know that for sure.”
William didn’t know all that had happened between Jason and me in recent weeks. We had grown closer. Jason had said things that have changed how I feel, and what I believe. Twasn’t as certain that Jason would try to take Ava away anymore.
Yes, Jason would be angry when he learned I had deceived and hidden from him for so long, but I didn’t think he would hate me.
I couldn’t tell William any of this, though, His feelings toward me were so possessive, to tell him that Jason and I had been slowly coming together would only hurt him.
“The decision is mine alone to make,” I told him, though I wasn’t any closer to deciding what I wanted to do.
Jason’s POV
I hated leaving Vanessa alone in the room with William, especially after we had been so rudely interrupted. Vanessa had been about to tell me the truth, I was sure of it, and maybe I was finally going to learn who she was. And why she had hid it from me for so long.
But William had burst in then, ruining everything yet again. It pained me to leave her alone in the room with him, but unfortunately, in this one instance, I could tell that I was making Vanessa nervous. Her heartbeat monitor had been beeping like mad, and her face had paled.
Now hadn’t been the time to talk about things, as much as I wanted my answers. Vanessa needed time to recover first.
When I returned out into the waiting room, I saw Riley talking to one of the healers. Ava wasn’t around, but Riley, spotting me, left the healer’s side to walk to mine.
“They’ve admitted Ava again. I’m going to stay with her,” Riley said.
“I’m going to assign a guard to you both,” I said. “The hospital president might be gone, and with Adelaide in custody, this nightmare might finally be ending. But I don’t trust anyone here anymore.”
“That would best, yeah,” Riley said. “Maybe assign one to Vanessa, too? I don’t like how vulnerable she is.”
On that, we could agree. “I’ll make the call.”
To my surprise, as I reached for my phone, it already started to ring.
Across the screen read Marcus, my Beta. Just the man I had been hoping to talk to, to coordinate some piptection. But it was strange for him to call me like this. I had left him in charge of checking with the jail to make certain Adelaide was booked properly.
Had something happened?
“Excuse me a moment,” I told Riley, then stepped away from her to answer the call. “Marcus. Tell me good news.

“I’m sorry, Alpha,” Marcus said. His terse voice sent alarm bells ringing in my head, and my entire body tensed.
“What’s going on?”
“Adelaide never made it to the jail. No one is telling me anything. When the officers who were to have escorted her arrived, they were immediately rushed into the commissioner’s office. I’m trying to find out what’s going on, but so far I’ve been stonewalled.”
“When you say she never made it to the jail…”
“I can’t prove they let her go,” Marcus said. “At the very least, she escaped custody.”

“She’s out there? Free? After what she did to Vanessa and tried to do to Ava?”
“I’m sorry, Sir, but yes.
My blood boiled in my veins. How dare this woman who had caused so much fear and harm to Vanessa and her parents think she could flex her power and escape justice < again.
Well, maybe in the past no one was willing to stand up against this corruption, but I sure as hell was. She wasn’t going to get away with what she’d done.
