Chapter 228
“You don’t know anything about what’s going on here, Alpha.”
“Maybe. Maybe not. But I know you are a coward who refuses to do what’s right. And I’know, whatever I have to do to return actual justice to this place, I’m going to do.”
“Is that a threat, Alpha?”
“No,” I said, growling now. “It’s a promise.”
Laila’s POV
Riley entered my room briefly to explain that Ava was being admitted again and that she was staying with her. I thanked her, and she left, leaving me alone with William once more. She did cast me an apologetic glance as she went, but that was unneeded. In keeping an eye on Ava, she was doing more for me than I could ever repay.
Things had gone quiet between William and me, which was better, I’d found, then our trying to talk and failing. I’d hurt his feelings many times, and I didn’t know how to fix things, not without leading him on or giving him false hope.
With how weak my body was, it was easier to lean back and close my eyes, trying to rest.
I didn’t receive much of it, when the door opened, and William said, “Hannah? What are you doing here?”
I opened my eyes at once, to see Hannah wearing a sweatshirt with the hood over her head sneaking into the room. She looked around nervously.
“Don’t say my name,” she said. “There’s a ton of people here who would tell my family everything, and I don’t want them to know I’m here.”
I pushed myself until I was sitting, my back against the headboard “Did something happen?” I asked. “What’s going on?”
“Adelaide came to the house, early in the morning,” Hannah said. She kept her voice low, her gaze snapping back to the door now and then, whenever someone would go by. So far, no one had paid her any attention. “She and Grandfather went into Vanessa’s room.”
I blinked. “You mean, my room?”
Hannah gave me a knowing look. “No. I mean, Vanessa’s room.”
A spike of fear shot through my heart.
“It’s fine. I’ve suspected for a long time, really. I’m assuming William knows, also?” Hannah asked, Shepooked to William for confirmation. William looked at me.
“I’m not trying to hurt you,” Hannah pressed. “I don’t care who you are. You’ve done so much for Jessica and me, even if Jess can’t see it. I know, and I’m grateful. Or else I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t warn you.” She took a deep breath. “Grandfather and Aunt Adelaide know. They found some pictures and some achievement for donating blood that has Vanessa’s blood type on it. You have to do something. They are going to try to expose you.”
William’s phone dinged. Immediately he went to check it.
Hannah moved closer to me. “You have to believe me. I just want to help. Something must have happened to Vanessa, didn’t it? She seemed sick for a while… She never told us anything but…”
My heart aching, I knew I couldn’t keep up the lie anymore, not with Hannah. This could have been a trap, but if she was right, it was likely too late anyway.
“She was sick, I’m sorry. But she also saved me, before the end. I don’t think I would have survived without her.”
Pride filled Hannah’s eyes. “What is your real name? What do I call you?”

Before I could answer, William stood up.
“William?” Lasked.
“There’s nothing we can do now,” he said:
