Jason’s POV
I stormed into the police station, ready to raise all kinds of hell. Marcus was already waiting there with a few of my guards, and together they had cornered the officers had left in charge with bringing Adelaide into custody
“What the hell happened?” I asked them.
They lowered their gazes, perhaps in guilt, but didn’t say a single word.
“What did Adelaide offer you?” I pressed.
They looked at each other. I searched their faces, determining which one was the weakest–willed, with the strongest morals. That one, I might be able to crack, to tell the truth. The one on the left just glared, but the one on the right wore a regretful frown. That was the one that I would be able to get the truth from. If I could only
“Alpha Jason,” said a more commanding voice from behind me. Turning, I recognized the commissioner. Not because I personally knew him, but from seeing his political ads everywhere last year. “May I talk to you in my office?”
The commissioner was in a position of power here, and I had to respect that, even if it annoyed the hell out of me. The hospital was at the edge of my territory, I had more sway there. But this police department was entirely outside of my pack lands and my jurisdiction.
As an Alpha, I was still the strongest person in the room. But while I could use my power to get what I wanted, that could lead to a diplomatic incident, or maybe a war with the humans. Plus, that kind of corruption was exactly what I was fighting. If I used fear to control these people, was I really any better than Adelaide herself, who had used her money and name to be free? Looking at Marcus, I told him, “Don’t let them out of your sight.”
At Marcus’s nod, I turned and walked to the commissioner. He led me to his office then gestured for me to go inside. As I did, he closed the door. I moved more into the center of the wide office but didn’t sit down. Neither did he, though he did join me at the center of the room.
“I understand you are upset, Alpha,” the commissioner said, but you can’t just come in here and start ordering around my officers.”
“Your officers allowed an older, injured woman to escape their custody,” I said, barely biting back a growl. “Tell me that wasn’t because they were offered money.”
The commissioner’s jaw locked for a moment, a tell which gave away his guilt. “It’s not always about money.”
“Power, then.”
“The Harper name goes back a long way. It cares weight.”
“She tried to kill her niece,” I said. “She nearly kidnapped Ava Harper.”
୮
“Yes, but she didn’t,” the commissioner said. “So can she really be considered a threat?”
“She will try again,” I snapped. His lack of logic was infuriating. “She will keep trying until she succeeds! And you will do what? Allow her to do so? Because of her family name?”
“She has earned the benefit of the doubt,” the commissioner said. “Whatever familial matters are going on between Adelaide and her piece are not the business of the police force. Or, frankly, excuse me, Alpha, of yours.”
I stood taller, exuding all of my Alpha strength. The commissioner seemed to sink into himself, immediately shrinking against my aura. But even so, even afraid and cowering, he grit his teeth and did not reveal more. Neither did he repent.
the hospital president and The corruption here ran deeper than I had ever imagined. Whatever Adelaide had over these men – now the police commissioner I could only imagine. It had to be something personal to get them to be so damn loyal, even as

humans standing against a werewolf Alpha.
“You disappoint me, commissioner,” I said. “Twould have liked to think you had more character than you are showing me here.”
