Laila’s POV
Jason went to the bathroom and returned with a washcloth. He gently cleaned up the mess, then tossed the towel aside, and slipped back into bed with me.
but I didn’t know how to close them. Even We faced each other, with his arm draped over my hip. Only a few inches separated us, after what we had just did, even after what I had revealed, now in the quiet, everything almost felt like too much.
“Can you tell me what happened?” Jason asked. “Back then, you just disappeared.”
“You came back with a mate,” I said. “I was pregnant. I didn’t know what to do. Then Brittany told me you didn’t want me there anymore. What could I do? I ran.”
Jason closed his eyes for a minute, a hint of pain on his face. I didn’t say anything, just watched. Nothing I could say would comfort him. After leaving the pack house, I had gone through hell. I would have likely died without the intervention of healers and nurses at the clinic, and without Vanessa.
“What happened to the money Brittany gave you?” he asked, opening his eyes again. “Why didn’t you use that to help with the medical bills?”
I blinked. “What money?”
Jason’s frown deepened. “She told me you wanted money, and she paid you off to leave.”
“She told me to leave. She said that’s what you wanted. I was never given any money.”
Jason lifted his hand up and away from me to cover his face. I shivered, immediately missing the loss of his warmth.
“She has lied to me about so many things. I should have known this was just one more,” he said. With a sigh, he lowered his arm back to my hip, and I breathed easier again.
At least, for a moment.
“Tell me about Ava,” he said then. “I had guessed because I am a possible donor for her that I had to be blood related. She is ours?”
“Yes,” I said. “It was a difficult pregnancy. I did the best I could for her, but –”
“Nothing that Ava is going through is your fault,” Jason said firmly.
“If I had been stronger…”
“No,” he said. “If anyone is to blame, it is me.”
“You weren’t even there.”
“Exactly. If I had been there for you, Gods, everything would have been different. You would have had the best doctors. The best care. I failed you, Laila. Both of you.”
“You thought Brittany was your mate.”
“I was a fool who didn’t know which way was up,” he said. “I had the whole world when I had you, and didn’t know it until I lost you. I hate myself for that. I don’t think I will ever forgive myself for it.”
I watched him quietly, unable to say a word, not even to offer my own forgiveness. He had chosen Brittany over me, then kept her all these years. They were married still, despite all that she had done.
I shouldn’t even be in this bed with him. He still belongs to another.
Regret crept over me, and I brought my hands up to my chest, protectively locking them over my heart.

“I can’t forgive myself, but I can fix things now. I’m no longer that young fool. I’m Alpha.” He focused on me. “Laila, you and Ava should move back into the pack house. We’ll reaffirm you as members of the pack, and I’ll take Ava as my heir.”
“What?” I gasped.
“Move back to the pack, and we’ll be the family we should have always been.”
