Early in the morning, I sat at a table in a small café that I knew Jason’s father frequented. I’d already sent him a note, asking him to meet me, so he wasn’t surprised to see me there. He came over and sat down at the table across from me.

“All this secrecy just to speak to me,” he grumbled. “Couldn’t we have done this at the pack house?”

“No,” I told him. “I couldn’t risk Jason overhearing this conversation.”
