The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 244

Chapter 244

She had to have planned her switch with Laila. That was just who she was. She was careful too, but there had to be some kind of paper trail.

Hannah,Carter whispered. Over here.

He had pulled out a file from one of the desk drawers and opened it on top of the desk.

Approaching, I could see what he saw.

A letter from one of her doctors?I said.

Loox here.He pointed down a couple of paragraphs. I read quickly. The doctor wanted her to go to a specialist for testing. He says, immediately.

They knew something was very wrong with her.

Here.He moved his finger to one of the final lines. They worried she might have advanced cancer. I know this type. Hannah, it’s aggressive as hell. If the biopsy came back positive, she would know she was likely terminal.

For a moment, I allowed my heart to ache for my sister, who kept this secret to herself, suffering alone. I had been young, but I wished she could have shared it with me. I supposed, she eventually shared it with Laila. At least she wasn’t alone in the end.

Do you think this is enough evidence?Carter said. There’s not much else in here.

It proves something, It has to.This was all we had.

Laila’s POV

As court ended for the day, I sagged in my seat. Perry looked somewhat stricken beside me,

I have to go,he said. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

until he checked his watch. 1

He didn’t look at me when he got up and walked away. We both knew this wasn’t going to end well for me.

I waited for the courtroom to mostly empty out before I stood. Turning, I saw Jason standing in the aisle like he had been waiting for me. I hesitated, but as this was the only exit for me from the room, I had to go to him.

As soon as I was close enough, he said, I’m sorry for how things went before. I was hopingMaybe we could sit down and talk. We could get coffee.

I don’t know if that’s a good idea.

r

I want to be here for you, Laila. Whatever you need. However you need. Our past made things difficult, but I want to work through it. If we face it, together, I’m sure we can both work through the pain.

You would really want to do that?

Yes,he said. I’ve made mistakes before, but those are in the past. I want to do things the right way this time.

Will you respect me, then, when I tell you I don’t want Ava and me to rejoin the pack?

He was quiet, and my heart ached.

As much as I wanted to believe he could change, I couldn’t get over this one thing. This obstacle would always be between us. And it he couldn’t respect me in this, how could I expect him to respect me in any other way?

If Ava and I joined his pack again, if he and I continued our relationship, he would only end up hurting us again. I couldn’t put myself in that position again. And I certainly couldn’t give that kind of false hope of a better life to Ava, just to have it ripped away from her.

Cheethe

Thad too much to lose.

I just want to talk,Jason said.

I’m sorry,

Laila!
