The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 243

Hannah’s POV

Are you sure it’s okay that I’m here?my friend from college Carter asked as we sneaked through my family home, heading to my sister Vanessa’s room. Victor and Adelaide were both out, and most of the servants were basy with their other duties. The room was as unwatched as it would ever be. It was the perfect time to sneak inside.

Four eyes are better than two,I told him, which wasn’t a lie. Sure, I had only invited him because I wanted an excuse to have more time with him, but he was smart and observant and could be helpful here as we searched for evidence to try to help Laila.

Carter was a senior in college, inching closer to graduation. I’d had a crush on him since we sat together in a creative writing elective class. He had such beautiful prose that I was smitten right away. It helped that he was tall and fit, with stylish blonde air and emerald green eyes. His smile should have been declared a weapon, it made my heart tremble.

He was also just a really nice guy who sometimes helped me with my homework and was always up for getting a coffee if I needed to talk or escape my family for a while.

Carter and I entered Vanessa’s room and I slowly and quietly closed the door behind us. We would have to talk in soft voices from here on out.

Are you sure you want to help a stranger?Carter whispered to me. Didn’t she impersonate your sister? What do you really know about her?

She’s not perfect,I said. But she’s always been there for Jessica and me. When she says Vanessa wanted her to take her place, on the condition that she continue to watch out for us, I believe her. And she has.Lowering my gaze, I said, She’s been more of a sister to me than Vanessa ever was.

Are you mad at your sister for that?Carter asked, watching me.

I’m not mad. We had a big age gap between us, and after our parents died, she came around even less than before. She had her work, and I guess her health. And grandfather was never nice to her. She had her reasons for staying away.

Laila tried a little harder. She made time for us. But I’m sure if Vanessa didn’t have those health issues, that she would have eventually come back. She would have taken Jessica and me away from here.

I tried not to dwell on it too much. What was done, was done. I was in college now, making my own way forward in life. Yes, was because of Laila’s help that I was able to afford it, but someday I would stand on my own two feet. Someday soon.

Carter watched me, but when I turned away, he too refocused on the room. So what are we looking for?Anything that shows Vanessa was planning to have Laila replace her. I don’t know what that could be, but there has to be something.

Laila hadn’t asked me for this, or for anything. But she had done so much for me, the least I could do was try to find something to help her. The websites and news channels were already biased against her, talking about her like she had definitely done the crime before it had even been proven. Before she had been convicted.

I’ll start at the desk,Carter said.
