When I arrived to Ava’s hospital room, William had left for a while, so it was just Ava and Riley.
“Mommy!” Ava cried, and I rushed to her to give her a hug. “I missed you so much! That night was so scary, and Aunt Riley said you got hurt.” There was a question in her voice as she looked me over.
“I did,” I told her. “But I’m feeling okay now.” This was only partially a lie. The medicine did help tremendously, numbing any sharp pain, but I still felt a dull ache across the width of my back. I wondered if I would always feel it, or if the wound would eventually fully heal.
“Okay,” Ava said. “It was scary.”
“It was.”
“Tha: lady was trying to take me somewhere.”
“Her name is Adelaide,” I said. “And if you ever see her again, I need you to scream as loudly as you can, okay? Don’t go anywhere with her. Run away from her.”
Ava nodded at my seriousness. “Okay, Mommy.”
A small relief rose in my chest. I hadn’t warned Ava last time, so she hadn’t known to be afraid of Adelaide. But now she knew. While I didn’t want my little girl to live in fear, it was important for her to be cautious.
Especially now, when I might not be around as much to be able to keep her safe.
“Listen to William and Riley when I’m not here, okay? They will know what to do.”
Riley gave me a sad kind of smile.
Ava didn’t notice. “And Alpha Jason? He still visits for the… the… wolf stuff I need.”
Wolf essence. One more visit and she would likely be strong enough for the surgery that could help cure her.
Yet I was cautious to give the same blanket permissions for Jason as I had given for William and Jason. Now that Jason knew that Ava was his daughter and wanted to make her his heir, I worried he might try to take Ava from me. I didn’t think he would ever hurt her, but he might deem being at my side too unsafe for her.

Even now, the guards that were at the door, placed there to protect Ava, felt more like prison wardens instead. What if they weren’t there just to keep the bad guys out but to also keep us from leaving?
Despite my best efforts to hide my worry from Ava, I couldn’t help looking back at the door.
“Mommy, are you okay?” Ava asked. She must have noticed.
“I’m fine, honey,” I told her and gave her a smile.
She tried to return it, but hers was as wobbly as my own. It was clear she didn’t believe me.
“You should color, Mommy.” Pulling from me, she turned to the nightstand to grab her coloring pages and some crayons. That always cheers me up when I am worried about stuff.”

“I’d love to,” I told her, warmed by her efforts to try to cheer me up. It was also comforting to see how easily she twisted and moved. She even reached out really far to get the crayons. All without being winded even in the slightest.
In the past, she would have gotten tired even from the slightest effort. To see how far she’d come since first starting her treatments with Jason gave me precious hope. Maybe everything would be okay.
For a while, Ava and I, and Riley too, colored in some pages
with crayons.
