Mom hummed, and silence fell around us again for another minute.

“She’s afraid,” Mom said.

“Maybe. I’ve hurt her in the past. When I chose Brittany as my mate back then, instead of her, that was the worst mistake I had ever made in my entire life. Mom gave me a long inscrutable look. “You need to earn each other’s trust, or it will brew resentment. You cannot go the full distance yourself. You need her to meet you halfway. But when I say that, I also mean that you need to be patient and kind. Her hurt runs deep and is coupled with fear. Press her, but gently.”

“Right now, I just need her to not go to jail.” I shook my head. “I hear what you are saying Mom, I do. But that can come later. Right now, I need to make sure I can keep her in my life, and not haye to visit her through a jail cell. And what would happen to Ava?”

“We would take Ava in,” Mom said at once. “If that happens.”

At least we had a plan for the worst case scenario, then, though I imagined Laila wasn’t going to be happy about it. But surely she would be able to understand. If the worst case scenario should happen, wouldn’t she want Ava protected?

As a healer walked out from the back hallways, our conversation abruptly ended. Spotting us, he came over. Mom and I stood and walked forward a few steps to greet him.

“Is there news about the surgery?” I asked.

“Is my husband okay?” Mom added.

The healer looked between us, before settling on Mom “Your husband is in recovery,” he said. To me, went well. The former Alpha is a fighter. He’s not ready to leave us just yet.”
