“I know she’s here,” I said firmly, adding just a hint of a growl into my voice for effect. “I will speak with her, or I will find her myself by tearing this house apart brick by brick. The choice is yours.”

Victor narrowed his eyes. I thought he might continue to attempt to stonewall me, but then I felt Adelaide’s presence in the nearby room. She had been hiding there, listening, and now she was coming closer.

“I will not be threatened, werewolf,” she said. She was a thin older woman, petite. Waifish. A strong breeze could knock her over. In another life, perhaps I would have admired her strength, but that was impossible to do in this one, when she had used that strength for personal gain and corruption.

She could have been a leader. Instead, she chose to be a villain.

“I don’t know why you would want to hunt me down, anyway,” Adelaide said. “I act only out of love for my niece, poor Vanessa. Her life was tragically cut short, and an imposter took her place. Tell me what a grieving aunt is supposed to think.”

“You are blind by your own emotions,” she said, laughing slightly. “You’re in love with that imposter, aren’t you? Laila. She used to be a part of your pack. It all came out in court today.”

Adelaide hadn’t been in the courtroom to hear Laila’s testimony, but I had no doubt she had connections that would fill her in, probably minute by minute.

“There is nothing you can do to harm me, Alpha Jason,” Adelaide said. “If you came here to make threats, I will make sure the jail cell right next to hers is prepared for you.”

She was so damn confident, I was going to enjoy taking her down,

“You are used to having things your way,” I said. “You’ve been arranging things from the start, since all those years ago, when you set up Vanessa’s parents to be killed. Your own sister.”

“You’ll have a hell of a time proving that,” she said.

“Maybe. Maybe not. Especially if you were fool enough to write down everything you did as a confession in your diary.”

She paled a little. “If there was a diary, and I’m not admitting there was, it disappeared a long time ago.”

“It did, but not by the people you think. It’s been in hiding, waiting for the time to come back to the light. How else would I know it exists?”

She placed a hand to the archway she stood in, like she needed the support or she might fall over. Not so strong anymore.

“You have access to this… diary?” Victor asked.

“I do,” I said. “And I can have it brought forward at any time.”

Victor looked at his daughter “You are a fool. You’ve always been a fool.”

“If you want that diary to stay hidden, you will go into court tomorrow and take back all the accusations you made. You will tell everyone that Vanessa died of natural causes, and you will never again mention this ridiculous murder charge.”

She swallowed thickly, looking nervous. I knew I was winning.

“You will tell everyone that Vanessa wanted Laila to take her place, to keep her work alive,” I added.

Adelaide lowered her head
