“Just because you understand doesn’t make it fair.”
“Can we talk about something else?” she said, her voice shaky now.
“What should we talk about?”
“Literally anything else,” she said.
“Okay,” I said, and changed the subject. Hannah remained guarded, though, and I worried my relationship with her was totally ruined.
How could I have been given another mate? And why did it have to be Hannah’s crush? What was the Moon Goddess‘ plan?
I didn’t have any answers.
Jason’s POV
I stood in front of the elder council as they sat around a u–shaped table, all of them facing me. For the past half–hour, I had been attempting to plead my case about rescinding Brittany’s Luna title. The elders had remained stone–faced and silent the entire time.

Now, as I reached the end of my speech, the lead elder spoke up. “Alpha Jason, we understand that you have been under a lot of pressure lately, and that the reemergence of your old acquaintance, Laila, has made things more complicated for you.”
“We aren’t talking about Laila,” I said through grit teeth, as I struggled to contain a sharp spike of anger. They called her an old acquaintance, like she wasn’t a part of this pack. Like she was someone I barely knew, and not someone I loved. “This is about Brittany being unfit to be Luna.”
“We appreciate you, Alpha,” said another elder. “You’ve done a lot of good for this pack, and your father was one of the best Alpha’s we’ve ever had. So we are asking you not to tarnish that legacy by believing lies whispered to you by those who have previously deceived you.”
“Laila has nothing to do with this. Brittany has been lying to be for years. She’s been attempting to manipulate me and has manipulated those around me, including my father.”
“Those are strong accusations,” said the lead elder.
“And I mean them. Brittany drugged me, more than once. She’s the one spreading lies.”
“You were not there for her during her pregnancy and miscarriage,” said another elder. “If she acted out in emotion after that, she needs help, not disdain and rejection.”
“She was never pregnant,” I said. “That was just one more lie. The miscarriage never happened.”
The elders looked at each other. A few whispered to one another. Many of them looked at me with disgust, like I was the one who had done something wrong here.
The tone of the room was against me. Despite my being Alpha, it was clear that they were taking Brittany’s word over mine.
Infuriating.
After the whispers made their way to the lead elder, he held up his hand, silencing the room.
“Do you have proof of any of this?” the lead elder asked.
I clenched my jaw. “No.”
“If
you do not have proof, then we cannot believe such wild accusations.”
I gripped my hands into tight fists. The lead elder glanced, noticed.

“Forgive us. Alpha. It is not in our nature to disbelieve you, but certain circumstances have made trust… difficult.”
“What kinds of circumstances?” I asked.
The elders glanced at one another again, before the lead elder spoke up once more. “We have heard that Laila’s child, the young and fragile Ava, is your daughter Do you deny this?”
“I do not,” I said. I’d never deny or reject my daughter. I regretted having to admit it here and now, when I knew Laila had wanted it to stay private. But Ava was my child, and I felt nothing but pride because of it.
“She is my daughter,” I said, “And I hope to someday soon bring her and her mother back into our pack.”
