Chapter 263

Laila’s POV

As I was in the kitchen with Hannah, the doorbell rang again. We both cringed.

Maybe just don’t answer it,Hannah said.

I have to answer it. It could be important,I replied.

You know it’s not.

I don’t fully know that.

The doorbell rang again. I walked out of the kitchen. Hannah sighed.

At the door, I opened it and immediately regretted it as a large bouquet of flowers blocked my vision.

Another delivery for you, Laila, said the teenager holding the bouquet. I have three more of these in the truck.

This was David. He’d been at my house so much now in the past two days that we now knew each other on a firstname basis. I had also learned he’d been using his tips from this job to save for college, so I always tucked a bit extra inside. As I was already strapped for cash, this only made things more complicated.

One more reason I wished the deliveries would stop.

I accepted the bouquet, but said, Is there any way you can turn away future orders from Carter?

You don’t like the flowers?David asked.

The flowers are beautiful, but you’ve been coming to the house three times a day for the past two days. Don’t you think that’s a bit much?

Totally,David said. The guy really wants to get on your good side. But if you like the flowers, and I’m making bank, what’s the downside?

I didn’t want to bother David with details, but truly, I felt like I was leading Carter on. Accepting all of these gifts didn’t feel honest. It wasn’t just the flowers. He’d also had gifts delivered: chocolates, fruits, even expensive jewelry. Carter was a college student, I couldn’t guess where he was getting the money. Unless he was from an affluent family.

I brought the current bouquet into the kitchen, and Hannah sighed even louder than before. I told you.

David has some more. Can you help?I asked.

Hannah hopped off the seat. You’ll be paying for his college too at this point.

I didn’t argue. Hannah’s hostility toward me and the situation had only been growing in the past few days. I didn’t begrudge her anything. She was in the worst spot of all of us, having to watch the person she crushed on throw all of his affections at me.

After accepting the bouquets, and giving David his tip, I found Hannah again in the living room, struggling to find a free surface to place the bouquet she was presently holding.

Why don’t you take one into your room?I asked.

I don’t want anything he gave to you,she snapped.

I winced. Okay, that was a bad idea. Hannah, maybe we should talk about this.

There’s nothing to talk about. Not finding any obvious places, she wedged the vase against the back of the couch, then took off toward the stairs. I have to get ready for class.

RightI said, standing surrounded by flowers. I sneezed.
