The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 265

I’d stewed on the elder council’s decision for a few days before I realized that I should tell Laila all that happened and was revealed. I’d been hoping to shield her from everything somehow, but I’d tried all my contacts, who in turn all explained that this story was too big to quiet. That Ava was my daughter would soon be hitting the tabloids, if not also the regular news.

So, while I was in my office, I picked up my phone and called Laila. It was later in the day now. I hoped to catch her at home. I didn’t want her to have to handle this revelation while surrounded by strangers.

Hello?

Fortunately, when she picked up, I didn’t hear any background noise.

Are you home?I asked. I have to talk to you about something very important.

I just walked in,she said.

I heard you got a new job.

You keeping tabs on me, Jason?

I’m just concerned,I said. I was worried you might have a hard time.

I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself.

I know that. This wasn’t going well. Already, I was putting my foot in my mouth. And I’m glad that it’s working out.

It is.

Good,I said.

Silence filled the line. When had I gotten so awkward on the phone? Likely though, it was because I was hedging, not wanting to talk about what we had to talk about, knowing it was going to make Laila upset.

I wasn’t a coward though. She deserved to know, and I had would rather she find out from me than on the news or in the grocery

checkout aisle.

Brittany has disappeared, so I went to speak with the elder council about having her title taken away and moving forward with the divorce.

I paused, waiting for her reaction. Whatever it was, she was hiding it from me.

What happened?she asked.

They didn’t go for it. But I’m still pressing forward, I want to assure you of that.

Okay, she said simply, and that was all.

But that’s not the only thing that happened.I took a breath. There was suspicion that Ava is my daughter andwell, now that suspicion has been confirmed for them. It won’t be long before everyone knows. I wanted to give you the forewarning.

She was quiet again.

Laila? Are you alright?

It’s been a long day,she said. I’m not

)}

She stopped abruptly, cut off by what sounded like her doorbell.

She sighed. Not again.

What is it? What’s wrong?

Hold on,she told me, but didn’t mute the call.

I could hear her footsteps as she walked to the door and opened.

Oh, it’s you,she said.

I’m sorry,a man said. I hope it’s alright that I came to see you. I couldn’t stay away, Gods, even only after two days, I missed you so much.

I froze. What was this? Who was this man who was clearly flirting with Laila?

Had she already moved on?

Jason? I’m sorry but I have to go,she said.

But

Can we talk later?she asked, but didn’t wait for a response before hanging up.

Lowering the phone from my ear, I looked at the screen in confusion. Something churned uncomfortably in my gut, bile creeping up my throat.

Was Laila dating other men? Was that why she was hesitant in taking me back?

Irrational anger and hatred for this man I didn’t even know swelled up inside of me.
