Daisy sat down. She seemed to be in shock for a minute, her eyes wide, before she cleared her throat and said, “Well. Not everyone is as bright as me in the morning. But that’s why I work reception!”
I gave her a small encouraging smile, even as my chest felt like it had been gouged out some. I knew there would be some that would be against me, but I didn’t expect it from the second person I met. Or for her to have looked at me with such disgust.
By the time everyone had come in, with Daisy introducing me to each one, no less than all five werewolves who worked here hated me. Most of the humans were indifferent, though some of them looked at me with distrust. I couldn’t blame them for that feeling. I had lied to everyone.
“I’m sure it will be fine,” Daisy said brightly, just as an instant message from Cynthia appeared on the computer screen we were
sharing
Send Laila to meeting room 1. Now.
Daisy’s smile turned nervous. “I’m sure it will be fine?” she said again, this time with a question in her voice.
I hoped she was right, but I had a feeling I was about to be fired. I’d only worked here an hour, this had to be some kind of record. Daisy told me how to find the meeting room, and standing, I followed her directions, finding the room easy enough. I knocked.

“Come in.” That sounded like Cynthia, so I opened the door and stepped inside.
The meeting room was already set up for a client, complete with a kind of graph projected against the far wall.
Cynthia was sitting at the head of the table. All five werewolves were standing near her. My gut sank down to the floorboards.
Slowly, I closed the door behind me and stepped nearer the table. “Did you need me for something?”
“Unfortunately, yes,” Cynthia said. She rubbed the fingers of one hand against her temple. “Your new coworkers here have leveled some heavy accusations against you.”
Cynthia already knew about my identity. Everyone did.
“What kind of accusations?” I asked.
“I saw you stealing,” Annette said with a sneer. “So bold. You were taking office supplies and putting them right in your purse.”
“I didn’t,” I said quickly.
“I saw it too,” said another werewolf, and then all of the rest, one after another.
“That is many witnesses,” Cynthia said.
“There’s no proof,” I replied. “If you check the cameras, you’ll see that…”
My voice trailed as I looked closer at the projected graph that was displayed behind the werewolves.
“Are those numbers right?”
Some of the werewolves turned.
“She’s trying to deflect,” Annette said coldly. “Don’t listen to her.”
“Quiet,” Cynthia said to Annette, whose mouth snapped closed. “Do you see something wrong, Laila?”
“I’m familiar with this company. I worked with this client in the past. These projections seem vastly inflated.”
Cynthia looked at the graph now too. Annette’s face started turning red.

“You don’t know anything about our business. You never did. You were lying about everything since the day you were born,” Annette said with a glare.
I wouldn’t let her get to me. I’d been bullied all my life. Annette wasn’t the one I had to impress or prove myself to.
“I know this client. He’s a very straightforward, honest man. He won’t like inflated projections,” I said.
“Stay out of this,” Annette snapped.
“No,” Cynthia said. “She’s right. Who came up with these projections? Someone take that projection down. We need those numbers reworked and quickly. Before our client gets here.”
She looked around at the werewolves still standing there. “What are you still here for? Go.”
Everyone moved at once, except Annette.
