The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 269

Jason’s POV

I pressed the phone hard to my ear, eager to hear her answer.

I don’t know what you are talking about, she said, which was not the answer I wanted to hear.

Last time we spoke, you ended the call abruptly because someone had come to your door. A man. And he seemed veryfamiliar with you.

She paused a minute, then spoke, You heard him?

Yes. So you know exactly who I mean.

He’s not my boyfriend.

Hearing her deny it only made me feel marginally better. I wanted to know who that man was, and why he was speaking to her like he was her fated mate. Yet I held myself back, biting down the words. Laila was already wary of me trying to find my way back into her personal life. If I pushed her too hard, she would simply lock me out again.

Through grit teeth, I asked, Does he know that?

He’s young. Confused. He thinks he can see a future with me, but he’s mistaken, she said.

Who is he?I asked. Someone I know?

I’m not sure,Laila replied. But, he’s not bothering me. There’s no need for you to get involved in any way.

If he’s making unwanted advances, he’s bothering you. Tell me his name, and I’ll get him to stop.

You don’t need to do that.

I insist.

Jason.

I’m just worried about you, Laila, and about Ava. If this guy is going to be hanging around, I want to know who he is.

I don’t know about this. She sighed. If I tell you, and you look him up and see he’s innocent, then you have to let this go. Promise me you won’t bother him at all. Is it a deal?

I didn’t want to lie to Laila, butif this was the only way she would give me a name. Her protection was more important to me than anything else right now, and she had too many enemies. I still wouldn’t be happy finding out whoever this is, but at least I would know. And if he was innocent, I could go back to just being jealous instead of jealous and worried.

His name is Carter. Carter Fairchild, she said. He’s a senior at the college.

I know that name,I said. How did I know that name? Frowning, I realized that Carter Fairchild was the oldest son of the Alpha of the nearby pack. Carter was in line to take over from his father, but he wasn’t Alpha yet. More an Alphaintraining. I know who that is.

Then you know he’s harmless, she said.

Yes, he wasn’t a real threat, not to Laila, nor to even Laila’s heart. At least not for now. I knew, given enough time, Carter might become a prominent pack member and have more to offer Laila than his boyish charm. Right now, though, I didn’t have much

concern.

And you can tell your guards to back off,Laila said. They won’t be needed at my house.

Adelaide is still out there,I said. I’d feel a lot better if my child was protected. And you, too, for that matter. She agreed to back off for now, but Adelaide has a vendetta for you.

No guards. I’d be happy to install a security system. I’d even agree to it alerting you if it were to go off. But I’m not going to have Ava live in fear. And I justthe guards make me uncomfortable.

I straightened in my seat Did they do something?

No. They’ve been professional. Butsometimes I feel like they are only here to keep an eye on me.

That’s not true.
