The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 270

Closing my eyes, I reminded myself that rebuilding things with Laila was going to take time. If I came on too strong I would lose her. I had to respect her pace and her need for distance. Allowing me to be patched into the alarm system was a good compromise. I had to respect that, and accept it for the gift it was.

Alright. But I’d like to have Marcus there when the security system is being installed, just to confirm it’s done correctly,I said.

Fine, she agreed. Now please call of your guard.

Okay,I said.

I have to go,she said, and hung up.

Not a good sign of things to come, if I couldn’t even get her to tell me goodbye. She was probably mad about the guards, and yes, okay, they had been filling me in on the comings and goings of Ava’s hospital room, but only for safety reasons.

Laila couldn’t be there every minute. My little girl needed protecting.

Lower the phone, I sighed. Ultimately, I needed to find some way to convince Laila to bring Ava and herself back into the pack. I knew she was against it at the moment, but they both would be so much safer in the pack house.

With the elder council’s lack of support and Brittany’s disappearance, bringing Laila into the fold, even if she wanted to be here, would prove to be a challenge. I had to find a way to deliver divorce papers to Brittany and also get the elder council on my side. Then, moving Laila in would be simpler.

I was at a loss on how to move forward though. In times like these, I wished I could talk to my father, but it was clear which side he fell onto. He only wanted to think the worst about me. I wondered how far back his grudge against Laila truly went.

He couldn’t have known about our relationship because he’d had such a strong reaction when I finally had told him. Yet, though she lived in the pack house with us, I didn’t remember any closeness between Laila and my Dad. Dad never seemed to pay her any attention at all.

Mom had been kinder. From how tightly she hugged Laila at the hospital the last time she had seen her, I knew some of those kind feelings were still in place. Perhaps she was the person to talk to.

Setting aside my phone, I stood and left my office. I walked through the pack house, looking for her. I even called out, Mom? Are you here? But there was no response.

I looked through the whole of the first floor before I found her sitting in the living room near my office, back where I started. Why hadn’t she called out to me? Surely she must have heard me searching for her.

Mom?I asked as I stepped into the room.

Oh,she said, startling from her thoughts. Jason. Were you calling me?

I was. Didn’t you hear?

I’ve been lost in my thoughts, I suppose,” she said. There’s been so much happening lately

As I came closer, she smiled at me, but her smile didn’t reach her sad eyes.

Is everything okay?I asked. Did something happen with Dad?

Your father is doing well. Recovering. Actually, I should get back to him soon. She started to stand.

Before you go, I was hoping we could talk for a minute. I’ve been trying to think of ways to convince everyone that Laila and Ava should return to the pack.
