The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 272

Susan tilted her head slightly Were you the reason that Jason wasn’t there for buna Brittany in her pregnancy? She lost her baby, you know. If Alpha Jason had been there, that probably wouldn’t have happened.

I looked at Susan, quickly assessing if she would be willing to accept the truth. She looked af me with an open curiosity, not really any hostility, so I made my choice.

Brittany was never pregnant,I said. That was a lie to keep her marriage from falling apart and to convince the public to take her side in any divorce.

Susan’s eyes went wide. Before she could say anything, the coffee was ready. She remained speechless as I poured myself a cup and left the breakroom.

Around 3 pm I wondered how Ava’s first day back at classes went. She should be finishing up around now. Hannah had already promised to pick her up from school so I eagerly awaited any text messages that would give me a hint into her day.

To my surprise, my phone rang instead, with Hannah’s name across the screen.

I glanced at Daisy for permission. I’d already told her about Ava being back at school, so she just smiled at me and said, Go on. Answer it. I want to hear about it too!

Quickly, I answered the phone and brought it to my ear.

Hannah? How did it go?

Laila, you have to get over here,Hannah’s voice was frantic.

Immediately, all of my senses went on high alert. I sat more upright in my chair. My adrenaline surged. My heart raced.

What’s going on?I asked.

Ava isn’t here.

Daisy understood and offered to cover for me, though I would have still left work even if she hadn’t. I raced far too quickly to the school, then rushed to where Hannah was arguing with one of the teachers assigned to pickup duty. The teacher was holding a clipboard and herself seemed frazzled, like she knew she had done something wrong but wasn’t willing to own up to it yet.

Where is Ava?I demanded, approaching. Where is my daughter?

The teacher looked from me to her clipboard and back again. And you are?

I’m Ava’s mother, Laila,I said. I was here this morning. And I already had permissions in place for Hannah to be able to pick up Ava this afternoon.

Yes, I see that, the teacher said. But unfortunately, since Hannah isn’t family, it didn’t feel right to tell her something she probably already knew but didn’t seem to.

I’m the mother and I’m here now,I said, quickly losing patience. Tell me where my daughter is.

Ava has already been picked up for the day,” the teacher said.

No,Hannah gasped.

That’s impossible,I said.

She’s not here, the teacher said, but didn’t seem all that upset about it. Why wasn’t she taking action? Calling the police? She had allowed my child to leave with someone else why was she acting so damned calm?

Who picked her up?I said, struggling now not just for patience but for calm. My wolf was lunging at the inside of my mind, wanting to break free, wanting to tear into this woman who endangered our child.

The teacher consulted her clipboard. It was the little girl’s grandparents. From the Moon Ridge Pack?

Sarah and her husband were not on the approved pickup list I had provided the school, but I could deal with that later. And I would.

Right now, I needed my daughter back, safe and happy, and away from that pack, that life that had been so cruel to me in my youth.
