Chapter 273
Laila’s POV

As it was still regular working hours, I knew just where Jason would be, and drove straight to the Alpha headquarters building. I stormed through the front doors, ignoring the receptionist who tried to stop me, and walked to the Alpha’s main office.
Marcus was standing at the door, and startled as I pushed past him.
Jason was sitting at his desk, but seeing me, he stood, his eyes widening. “Laila? What are you doing here?”
“Where is my daughter?” I demanded.
Alarm crossed over his face. “What are you talking about? Why would she be here?”
“Ask your mother,” I said, venom in my voice. “She kidnapped her.”
“She…”
Jason’s face went suddenly pale. At once, he grabbed his phone, opened it, and made a call. His phone to his ear, he listened for a moment, before saying, “What have you done?”
A pause.
“I don’t care about that. Is she safe? Where are you?”
Another pause.
“Stay there. We’re coming to you. Yes. Me and Laila. She’s here, too. She wants her daughter back.” He lowered his voice. “This isn’t okay, Mom. What were you thinking?”
“Where are they?” I demanded, having no time for any other conversation. When I could see with my own two eyes that Ava was safe, then I would entertain this kind of talk. Then, I’d probably want explanations. Right now, I just wanted my daughter back.
“Stay right there,” Jason said in the phone. “I’m serious, Mom.” He hung up. Looking at me, he said, “Let’s go.”
As loathe as I was to get in a car with Jason at this point, if he knew where my daughter was, I was willing.
Surprisingly, he chose to drive us himself. In the passenger seat, I glanced as the speedometer climbed well above the limit for these streets. Jason gripped the steering wheel so hard that his knuckles turned white.
I would have thought that he’d spend this entire time making excuses for his mother, but he seemed just as upset about this as I was. His jaw was locked, his gaze hard on the road ahead. Every now and then, he shook his head slowly, like he couldn’t quite believe this had happened.
Then, finally, he pulled over into a parking lot beside a community park with a jungle gyin and swing set. Ava was running around, playing. Sarah was standing nearby, laughing and calling for her.
I was out of the car before Jason even switched it into gear. His car door opened shortly after mine.
“Ava!” I called, racing into the park.
Ava looked over from the jungle gym. “Mommy?”
She’d been smiling at her grandmother. That smile remained for me, though added a worried tinge as she slid down the slide
and ran over to me.
Sarah’s smile dimmed, her face going tight as she walked toward us, slower.
I kneeled down to catch Ava into a hug. “Are you okay?” I asked her.
“I’m okay,” she said, but sounded a little winded. She wasn’t supposed to be overdoing it with the physical activity. Sarah

apparently didn’t know that. She would have if she had asked me if she could spend time with Ava, instead of kidnapping her.
As I straightened, I glared at Saiah. I didn’t want to lose my temper in front of Ava, but I was dangerously close to telling Sarah off. She’d always been kind to me, tried to remember that now. But this was beyond the pale. She had been reckless and selfish, and had endangered my child, who was only one day out of the hospital!
I grit my teeth, biting back my harsh words. They must have shone in my eyes though, because Sarah looked at me with guilt.
“I’m sorry, Laila,” she said.
That wasn’t good enough. “Who gave you the right?”
“I only acted for Ava’s benefit,” Sarah said. “She’s safer with pack.”
