Chapter 274
“Safer than with her mother?” I asked.
Jason stopped beside me, standing at my side against his mother. “You shouldn’t have done this, Mom. This was way over the line.”
Sarah lifted her chin, prideful, even as regret flashed across her face. “I did what was best.”
“Was it best for me, how I was treated in your pack?” I asked, unable to hold back anymore. “I only ever wanted to belong, but I was treated as an outcast. Why would that be different now, even for my daughter? No. If you wanted to spend time with her, you should have asked me. Now, I don’t know if I can ever trust you again.”
Sarah’s face lowered marginally, the pride slipping away. But she didn’t say a word.
“I’ll drive you back to your car,” Jason said to me. To his mother, he added, “This wasn’t right, Mom. We’ll talk about this later.”
Then he turned his back to her. Stretching his arm out behind me and Ava, without touching us, he guided us back to the car.
Ava’s smile had fell, her eyes wide with worry. She didn’t understand what was going on, and I felt so sorry that I had to upset her in this way. But I couldn’t just leave Sarah without telling her something.
“Did I do something wrong?” Ava asked, and my heart broke.
“No, honey. None of this is your fault.”
“Is… Sarah in trouble?” Ava asked.
“She did something not very nice,” I said.

Now my own guilt rose up inside of me, but I squashed it. Sarah had been in the wrong here, and couldn’t be trusted now. I wasn’t the one who had damaged any possible relationship she might have had with Ava. She was the one who did that, by taking Ava out of school without even asking me.
“We’ll talk about this when we get home,” I said, side–eyeing Jason, who had stayed quiet beside us.
He’d acted like he had no idea about any of this, but I didn’t know how much of that was true. I needed space and time away from this moment, this anger. I needed Ava safe and home. Then I could sort through the facts and my emotions, and figure out what I was going to do.
Right now, I just needed out of here.
Jason drove us back to the Alpha headquarters building, where I had left my car.
Just as we pulled up, he said, “I’m so sorry about this, Laila.”
“Save it,” I told him and hopped out of the car. I went to the backseat and opened the door for Ava.
“Bye, Alpha Jason,” she said.
“Bye, Ava, sweetheart,” he replied.

I ushered Ava quickly to my car, eager to get away. Yet, just driving away didn’t feel like enough. I felt like I was letting the entire family off too easily for what they had done.
Ava could have gotten hurt, and I never would have known until it was too late. The school had dropped the ball in allowing this, and I was going to confront them for it. But Jason and his family and his whole pack added to the trouble. They did things without asking, like they were entitled to it.

The thought of asking me to spend time with Ava probably never crossed Sarah’s mind at all. She likely just thought she had the right as a grandmother to do whatever she wanted, to hell with what I thought.
After securing Ava, I returned to Jason’s car. He was getting out of it and stopped when he saw me.
