Jason’s POV
I left the Alpha headquarters and went straight to the hospital. For the entire drive, I considered ways I might speak with my father to try to convince him to stop seeing and believing Brittany.
Knowing that Brittany was the one whispering lies into Dad’s ear cleared up a lot of puzzles for me. Why he’d been so hostile to me, Ava, and Laila. Why he’d been so generous to Brittany. Why he hadn’t listened to me about the drugging. Why he was so insistent that Laila was the one manipulating me, all the while Brittany had been manipulating him.
By talking to Mom, I had managed to wake her from the fog of Brittany’s manipulations, delivered to her ears from my father’s mouth. But my father was much closer to the source, and had likely been hearing the lies for much longer. I knew he would be harder to convince.
Still, I had to try. Dad was respected. He’d had a good legacy. It wasn’t right that Brittany was using him like this, and willing to take him down to her lowly level in an effort to bring herself up.
I walked into his hospital room ready for a fight, unsure if I could actually win it.
Dad was awake, reading through handwritten correspondence. I knew he liked to keep up with the recent events of the pack. I could only hope that was what the letters actually contained, and that they weren’t more lies from Brittany.
“Jason,” he said, looking up as I entered. “I wasn’t expecting to see you.”
“It’s not so rare that I’d visit, is it?” I asked.
“No, unless it’s during business hours,” Dad replied. He checked the watch he insisted on wearing, even though he wasn’t supposed to. “Last I checked, you should still be on the clock.”
“I’ll make up for it later,” I said. “Right now, I want to talk about you. And it couldn’t wait.”
“Alright.” Dad folded up the correspondence and set it to the side. He straightened himself further, his bed already in an upright position behind him, as I moved to his side. “What is this about?‘
“I’ve heard that Brittany has been visiting you,” I said. My father was a straightforward man. He found no value in beating around the bush, so I went in directly.
“I’m allowed to see whoever I want,” Dad said flatly.
“She’s been filling your head with lies,” I said.
He scoffed. “Don’t be ridiculous. She simply reports on the things she sees, and frankly, son, she’s a far more reliable source than you’ve been the past year.”
“Dad – ”
“No, I’m serious, Jason. Ever since that new woman came into your life, you’ve been reckless and impulsive. And selfish, I can tell you that. You neglected your wife, allowing her to lose your child. Your child, Jason! I don’t know how you can live with yourself.”
“Brittany was lying about being pregnant, Dad. There was never any child. She never had a miscarriage.”
“And who told you that? Laila? You tell me Brittany has been filling my head with lies, but Laila is the one who’s convinced you to believe the bullshit.”
“Brittany was never pregnant, Dad, because our marriage had never been consummated.”
“Bullshit,” Dad said. “Brittany is a looker. After all this time, you expect me to believe you resisted your own mate? Your own wife?”
“I’m telling you, Pad

“I’m telling you. Laila is the panipulator here. She seduced you all those years ago, just to hold that baby over you now. Are you sure the child is even yours? Maybe you should be tested.”
