I looked at him like he was a stranger, feeling like I was in some kind of backwards world were up was down and right was left. My father was accusing me of being brainwashed, when clearly the brainwashed one was him!
Yet he was so deeply entrenched, I felt like there was nothing I could do to pull him out of this
“Dad,” I had to try one more time. “You know Laita, She grew up in the pack house. She looked to us for friendship and comfort. You saw her grow up. How can you think so little of her to assume the worst of her now?”
“She was always a threat,” Dad said. “I should have known better than to let that snake in the grass into our home.”
My anger seethed, burning hot within me. I knew this wasn’t my father speaking, but Brittany’s lies. But the hateful words were coming from his mouth, even if they weren’t originally his. If Laila had been here to hear them…
“Youneed to forget about Laila,” Dad said. “Repair things with Brittany, and go back to focusing on the pack. Enough lies. Enough distractions. An Alpha should be better.”
“That’s right, father,” I said. “I am Alpha. And as Alpha, I will do as I please. I love you, and I always will, but you are wrong in this. I will divorce Brittany, who is a liar, and I will seek Laila’s forgiveness. Whether I have the council’s support or not. Whether I have your support or not.”
My father looked at me, and I didn’t know him anymore. “You are no son of mine.”
“Yeah, well, you don’t act much like the father I know either.”
Seeing there was no path forward here, I turned and walked out of the room. I wouldn’t be back here, but neither would Brittany. That was something I could make sure of, as Alpha. And I didn’t care if that made me look bad anymore.
The only way to help free my father of these delusions now was to cut off the source.
And that meant Brittany.
Laila’s POV
At the end of another long work day, I was exhausted. I hadn’t been sleeping much, reliving the horror of Ava being taken, not just by Sarah but by Adelaide. The security system had been installed at the house, but it still offered little comfort.
Because of what I had allowed to happen, I felt so helpless now. I needed to stay awake, stay active, in case something else occurred when I closed my eyes.
That wasn’t sustainable, though, and now as I was leaving the office, I was practically dead on my feet. I had no idea how I was going to drive myself home.
“Need a lift?” asked a friendly voice from beside me on the sidewalk. I startled, having been so spaced out that I hadn’t seen Carter come up beside me.
“What are you doing here?” I asked him.
“Checking on you,” he replied. “Hannah told me you might want to see me.”
“She did?”
He winked. “She told me about your plan to fake date. I’m all for it.”
“No,” I said. “I couldn’t ask you to do that. You want us to be a real couple and
“I don’t care about any of that,” he said brightly. “I’d do anything for you, Laila. Is that so hard to believe?”
It wasn’t. “I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“And I don’t want you to get hurt,” Carter replied. “You look exhausted. Let me at least drive you home. Then we can figure all
