Chapter 282
Laila’s POV
“He doesn’t love me,” I told Ava “Even if he thinks he does right now, he’s just confused.”
Ava gave me a look that told me she didn’t believe me.
“He’s not my Daddy,” Ava said, crossing her arms.
“He’s just a friend,” I reiterated.
“For now,” Hannah added.
I gave her an exasperated glance. “Please don’t encourage this.”
Hannah shrugged. “Just calling it like I see it.”

“Well, call something else. He’s going to get over it and move on, and that’s that.” To Ava I said, “There’s nothing to worry about, honey. I have no intention of getting together with anyone.”
Her frown deepened. Why did I feel like I only made things worse?
Jason’s POV
The next morning, I sat in my office chair, my hands curled into fists on my desktop. I was still irritated from Dad’s blatant disrespect of Laila, but now I had Carter to deal with. I didn’t know what his game was, or if he was playing one. But I wasn’t going to let him get away with being insincere with Laila’s affections.
Marcus knocked on my door first, giving me a half–second to try to calm myself down, before he opened the door and allowed Carter inside.
“Thanks,” Carter said to Marcus, smiling while Marcus glowered at him. That same smile stayed on Carter’s face as he looked at me. At once I recognized that look as smug. “I thought you might want to talk to me, sooner or later. Man to man.”
There was nothing about this conversation that would be man to man. Carter wasn’t even an Alpha yet. He was practically just some punk kid.
“Sit down, Carter,” I said, irritation seeping into my voice.
His smile became a smirk. He did eventually sit down but he did so slowly, like it had been his idea the whole time.
I wanted to reach across the desk and punch that smirk right off of his face.
“You say you’ve been expecting this,” I said. “Why?”
“Because I’m mates with Laila. Figures her ex would want to try to ruin it. Listen, I don’t blame you, Laila is perfect in basically every way. But you fumbled it, Jason. It’s time to let someone else treat her right.”
I clenched my jaw for a beat. “And that person is you?”
“Yes,” Carter replied simply. “She’s perfect for me, and I’m perfect for her too. I’m graduating soon, and then I’m going to take over the family business. Someday, I’ll be Alpha of the pack, and then I’ll be able to treat her like she deserves. Like the Queen she is.”
“I know your parents,” I said. “They aren’t going to accept Laila. They’d never allow a Luna that already has a child with another Alpha.”
“I thought you might make that threat too,” Carter said, his smile not wavering. “But it’s an empty one. And beneath you. I’m not going to be scared away so easily. Laila is my fated mate, gifted to me by the Moon Goddess. You blew your shot, Jason. Sorry, but it’s my turn now.”
