This was not going at all how thought it would. I had imagined that a few harsh words would have rattled Carter, proving he hadn’t thought this throw, and making him drop whatever act he was playing. Instead, I was the one left shaken.
Carter appeared genuine. He seemed to actually care about Laila.
And if he was telling the truth, if Laila was actually happy with him…
I wanted to ring his smug neck, but above that, I wanted Laila to be happy.
“Tell me how exactly you plan to take care of her and Ava when you aren’t even an Alpha yet,” I said.
“I’ve got plans. The family business, yeah? Dad’s going to get me in.”
Nepotism was his plan then. His family was wealthy, though. That could be enough, assuming his parents would go for it. I still had doubts, given Laila’s background. But if Carter would fight for her, then maybe….
Ugly jealous sat in the pit of my stomach, a lead weight that wouldn’t digest. It burned hot, fueling my anger, but in this moment, my anger had nowhere to go.
Carter was here. He was giving answers, pleading his case. I didn’t agree with him, but I could see his passion. I could tell that he loveti Laila.
“You are sure she is your fated mate?” I asked.
“Positive,” he replied. “She’s everything to me. Just being around her, and I’m so happy. And my wolf! He wants to be around her all the time. We’re going to take care of her, man. You don’t have to worry about anything. She’s never going to have to want for anything when she’s with me. Ava either, for that matter.”
“You’ve met Ava?”
“Not yet. Laila’s wanted to move slowly. It makes sense. But I’m great with kids. I’m sure it will be great.”
I felt hollowed out, empty, like someone had come through and scooped all of my emotion out with an ice cream scooper. If this was what Laila wanted…
My hands curled into fists.
Did I care about her enough to let her go? When I knew the other man she was going to was Carter Fairchild?
“If you hurt her or Ava,” I said, adding some Alpha threat into my voice, “I will kill you.”
Carter’s smile finally fell. “I would never hurt either of them,” he said. “On that, you have my word.”
I had no choice but to believe him.
“Get out of my office,” I said.
{
He nodded, didn’t say one word more, and left. He wasn’t such a fool after all, if he could recognize how close I was to violence. One more provocation, and I would have decked him.
Instead, I sat alone with my anger, my rage, my affections for Laila that were now unrequited.
If I had been in a position to move faster… If I hadn’t continued to be tied down with these matters of divorce…
It was only because I hadn’t been free to love Laila that the Moon Goddess had given her another mate.
I slammed my fist down on the desk. The wood creaked under the blow.
“Damn it,” I growled.
Marcus appeared at the door. “Alpha?”
“We are finding a way to move forward with this divorce,” I said. “I want to be free of Brittany. Now.”
